Development programme
proves a hit with managers
T
HE Management Development Centre
(MDC) at Durham Business School is
helping companies develop their staff
and get the best out of their business.
A Professional Development Programme (PDP)
run by the centre is bringing together managers
from a variety of sectors to give them a practical
understanding of management development.
Participants attend six two-day modules over
the course of a year.
The programme focuses on managers as
individuals, looks at personal development, that
of his or her team and the tasks managers need to
perform.
As well as Durham Business School's facilities,
mentors are on hand to advise and challenge
participants to ensure that they get the most out
of the experience.
This year's participants represented a range of
organisations including the NHS, Hartlepool
Water, Nigel Wright and Thorn Lighting.
Alan Kelly, senior project engineer at Thorn
Lighting, said: "The Professional Development
Programme is an excellent short, sharp course
with quick results. It helped me to improve a
number of our procedures at work, which
contributed to me being promoted."
Byron Beatty, managing consultant at Nigel
Wright Recruitment, added: "It's the best course I
have ever been on in terms of its practical
relevance to the workplace it really helped me
to reflect on how to work with colleagues and
clients more effectively."
The success of the programme has also
extended as far afield as Gibraltar with 50
managers from within the Gibraltar Civil Service
starting the programme in October.
The PDP programme is an ideal stepping stone
to the Executive MA in Enterprise Management,
which focuses on the strategic issues affecting
middle and senior managers in their workplace.
The MDC can also bring its management
programmes to businesses and is currently
delivering bespoke and accredited courses on
client sites in the North East and around the
world. The next PDP starts in February at Durham
Business School.
