f you're looking for an Italian meal, then
you don't have to go far anywhere in
Thanet. Magnolia Fish & Bar is the latest
addition, offering flavours from Naples. Davide
Magnolia, the brother of Paulo, who owns
Magnolia in Ramsgate, arrived in England from
Pozzuoli in Naples a year ago. After working
with his brother and learning some English, he
decided to carry on the family's culinary
tradition and open a restaurant in Broadstairs.
Magnolia Fish & Bar is on the site of the old
Albion bookshop, and the shop front has been
transformed into a huge window that opens out
onto the street, affording beautiful views over
Balmoral Gardens and onto the sea.
The interior is more caf� style than
restaurant, and there is a very reasonable lunch
time set menu offering a simple starter of either
olives, bruschetta or soup, followed by a choice
of pasta and a panini burger, plus a soft drink,
all for �7.95.
However, the � la carte menu is more
extensive and focuses, as the name of the
restaurant suggests, on fish and seafood. The
huge variety on offer from oysters, prawns,
crayfish, octopus and squid to salmon and cod
is bought in daily from the Ramsgate
fishmonger, Eddie Gilbert. In fact there is a
tantalising display of it all in an iced counter at
the front of the restaurant. I indulged in an
insalata Magnolia (�8.90) � crayfish served with
a mixed salad, squid, potatoes and grain
mustard � which was zingy and fresh, and
totally delicious. Other tempting delights on
the menu included a risotto with fresh rock
oysters in prosecco sauce (10.95), grilled fresh
squid, king prawns, swordfish and scallops
with a mixed salad (�10.95) and a linguine with
crab, cherry tomatoes, rocket and parmesan
(�10.95). This really is a fish lover's delight,
though there is a small choice of meat dishes,
such as meatballs, Italian sausages and
spaghetti Bolognese.
In addition, there is a daily specials board,
which features fresh fish and seafood of the day,
such as sardines, whitebait and sea bream. The
talented chef, Francesco, makes all the desserts,
be it banoffee pie, panna cotta or tiramisu, fresh
every day. Unfortunately there is very little
vegetarian choice, save a tomato pasta and the
side orders, which include spinach, aubergine
and mushrooms.
