alike. It makes the perfect way to spend an hour or
two in a relaxing atmosphere.
It's easy just choose a piece of pottery and

artistic, simple designs look good.

have it posted home. Prices start from just 4 up to
42 for a huge platter, with a studio fee of 2.50 per
painter. There is something for everyone, young or

EXPLORING on foot is the only real
way to appreciate all that the centre of
Holt offers, with many shops, public
houses and hotels along the busy High
Street and in the alleyways and court-
yards. The range and variety of goods
available are a delight, from antiques and
artists' supplies to traditional grocers,
upmarket clothing and jewellery, fish-
mongers, butchers and bakers, toy
shops and tea shops -- and more.
THE award-winning Letheringsett Watermill is both a
major tourist attraction and a thriving flour-making
business.
Since Mike and Marion Thurlow took over the mill,
on the River Glaven between Fakenham and Holt, in
September, 1987, they have continually developed
the mill's resources, the most recent project being
the installation of a new set of mill stones.
This work follows a major project which saw the
top two floors brought into public use.
The third floor displays a photographic history of
Letheringsett Watermill and an original display of the
River Glaven and its original watermills.
The fourth floor, or the schoolroom, with its
Victorian feel, has been developed to encourage
learning with models and hands-on activities aimed
at youngsters and the not-so-young.
The watermill dates from 1802, although it
stopped working by water power in 1944 and was
subsequently used as an animal feed mill powered
by diesel. In the mid-1970s much of the operation
went to the nearby barn because the mill was in a
bad state, and in 1982 the Letheringsett Estate
began efforts to restore the mill to working with
water power.
Mike and Marion Thurlow took over the mill in
September 1987, continuing the restoration process
and starting their business producing different types
of flour.
Originally, flour was produced in small quantities,
but the business has grown to such an extent that
today Letheringsett Watermill buys in flours from
other mills and has a range of 15 different varieties
of flour and its own muesli. It also sells fruit, nuts,
seeds and pulses.
Letheringsett Watermill has picked up many acco-
lades over the years, including 12 awards for the
Top Tourist Attraction in North Norfolk.
The development at Letheringsett is on-going,
with an emphasis on milling from grain to bread,
linking local agriculture and food production and
renewable energy sources.
THE Shell Museum, Glandford, is the oldest pur-
pose-built museum in Norfolk and houses the
finest seashell collection in the UK.
As well as thousands of exquisite seashells,
the museum also contains fossils, birds' eggs,
agate ware, local archaeological finds and many
more fascinating items.
The museum underwent a major refurbishment
programme in 2003 when great care and atten-
tion were taken to both enhance and preserve its
unique Victorian collection.
A small building with Dutch gables, it was built
in 1915 by the late Sir Alfred Jodrell, Baronet, of
Bayfield Hall, in a style to harmonise with the rest
of the village.
The original purpose of the museum was to
house a collection of shells made over a period
of sixty years by Sir Alfred himself and stored in
boxes at Bayfield Hall until the museum was
built.
These shells come from all corners of the
earth, and the collection is constantly being
added to. There are shells of every hue, shells as
delicately coloured as butterfly wings: shells
exquisitely carved.
Next to the museum stands St Martin's
Church, a charming church which contains elab-
orate woodcarving and beautiful stained glass
windows, and whose carillon of 12 bells plays a
hymn every three hours.
