Ros Rigby
Performance
programme
director at The
Sage Gateshead.
My favourite
outdoor spot in
the North-East
is... our own
garden since we had a natural
swimming pond created there last
year.
My favourite indoor location home
aside) is... The snug in the Crown
Posada on the Side in Newcastle -
a great old-fashioned pub.
The last performance to really
move me was... The Blind Boys of
Alabama singing Silent Night in their
Christmas concert at The Sage.
If money was no object, the piece
of art I would like in my home
would be... a Colin Rose sculpture.
I love the simplicity of his work,
particularly Rolling Moon opposite
the Copthorne.
My favourite book is... no one
book, but I recently enjoyed The
Summer Book by (Moomin books
author) Tove Jansson. This is one of
her books for adults but perfectly
captures the perspective of a rather
self-willed and individual child.
The film I could see again and
again is... The Outlaw Josey Wales
by and with Clint Eastwood.
At the moment I am listening to...
Lionel Lueke's album KARIBU - he'
s an amazing African guitarist who
came here with Herbie Hancock last
November and who'll bring his
band to the Gateshead International
Jazz Festival (March 20-22).
The person I'd most like to meet
is... Bob Dylan when we finally get
him to The Sage Gateshead!
My perfect day would be to... A
great breakfast cooked by my
husband Graeme; an afternoon at
the Turkish Baths in Newcastle with
my daughter Annie and other
female friends; a meal at Caf
Zonzo in Sandyford and then a
music event (NOT run by me) with
my family where we can dance.
My favourite cultural thing to do
is... outside music, I really enjoy
visiting artists' studios and buying
work direct.
The region would be a better place
if... the River Tyne had more activity
on it in NewcastleGateshead
floating hotels and restaurants,
more boat races, the Tall Ships and
other craft as often as is possible
it's one of our greatest assets and
we're not taking advantage of it!
Every month we give one of the regions
museums and galleries the chance to
boast about something in their
permanent collection... heres this
months North East treasure.
Autumn Bride by Lucien Lvy-Dhurmer,
chosen by Emma House, assistant keeper of
Fine Art at The Bowes Museum.
This painting depicts the famous Parisian actress
Marguerite Moreno (1871-1948) who had a
successful career acting in films until the 1940s.
Lvy-Dhurmer has painted the work on a gold
ground which captures the glow of the autumn light
and the delicate reflections on the water.
This unusual technique gives the painting an
ethereal quality, which is intensified by the
incorporation of long willowy silver birches in the
background and the female's long flowing hair and
veil.
