MORE than one million objects in
Glasgow's museums collection are
in storage at any one time, but each
and every one is available for
viewing at a state-of-the-art
building on the city's south side
and you are invited.
The treasures are housed at the Glasgow
Museums Resource Centre a venue
which has recently benefited from a
massive 12.8million redevelopment.
It reopened in September 2009, after a
two-year closure saw a vast new storage
area being built on the site in South
Nitshill Industrial Estate. This meant an
additional 800,000 objects could be stored
at the GMRC.
Now more than one million objects are
housed in its climate-controlled`pods'
among the more unusual objects are
human remains from Australia.
As collections services manager, it is
Ellen McAdam's responsibility for
everything that happens to the city's
ever-expanding collection, which is worth
an estimated 1.4billion.
Besides being in charge of the storage,
transportation and loaning of"Glasgow
City Council's single biggest asset", Ellen
heads up her own research
section which no other UK local
authority museum service has.
The former archeologist, who has been
in the post for almost nine years, says:"It is
a fantastic job.
"It's all about joining up audiences and
collections. We always bear in mind that
the collection we're looking after belongs
to the citizens of Glasgow and it's our job
to make it accessible to the citizens now
and to preserve it for citizens of the future."
It was prior to the refurbishment of
Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum that
the centre's first phase opened at a cost of
7.4million.
Its purpose was to house many of the
gallery's exhibits during the revamp. Then
when Kelvingrove reopened and its
Glasgow's hidden gem
