Wells-Next-The-Sea Tourist Information
Centre: Staithe Street, tel 0871 200 3071.
NARROW streets winding down to the quay-
side... the channel and marshes with superb
views towards the sea... the friendly beach with
its unique sheltered spots along the channel...
It can only be Wells-Next-The-Sea, so familiar
to the generations of visitors and holidaymakers
who come back time and time again.
It's all gloriously old-fashioned, with a charm
that appeals to every generation. For the older
members of the family, it brings back memories
of their childhood visits to the seaside; for the
youngsters it's a chance to discover the delights
of a real seaside experience.
Explore those narrow streets leading off above
the quayside and you will find many little shops
with unusual gifts and crafts, while you can
either take a bracing walk along the sea wall to
the beach, or travel down on the small train
which keeps busy shuttling backwards and for-
wards between the town and the beach in the
summer season.
If you fancy a longer journey by rail, then you
can take a trip on the Wells and Walsingham
Light Railway to nearby Walsingham. This is the
longest ten-and-a-quarter inch gauge railway in
the world and you can see the unique Garratt
Locomotive specially built for this line. There is a
daily timetable service from Good Friday to the
end of October.
Wells is no longer a busy port for commercial
trade, but this maritime activity has been
replaced by an increasing influx of leisure craft
which is now being developed further by the
town.

HOLKHAM Hall was one of the country house
locations selected for the film The Duchess,
the story of the beautiful and glamorous
Georgiana Spencer, the most fascinating
woman of her age.
Holkham Hall and Kedleston Hall in
Derbyshire were used to recreate the interi-
ors of Devonshire House, the London resi-
dence of the Duke of Devonshire -- a building
which no longer exists.
Set at the end of the 18th century, The
Duchess stars Keira Knightley as Georgiana
and Ralph Fiennes as the Duke of
Devonshire.
Now you have a chance to enjoy the film
and to visit Holkham to see exactly where
some of the scenes were filmed.
