he Cupcake Caf� and Deli in Margate
Old Town is the most recent of the new
crop of delis in Thanet. The owner, Lisa
Hemingway had originally planned to open a
cupcake caf�, following the success of her cake
catering, but the concept grew quickly into a
more kitchen and food shop. The cupcakes
themselves are still the stars of the show, fluffy
little numbers, made from free-range eggs and
topped with a butter icing, which includes
mascarpone, and is flavoured with unusual
combinations such as lemon and lavender
(fresh), and peanut butter. You can also indulge
in a slice of delicious homemade carrot cake or
chocolate sponge, or whatever is on offer that
day. An indoor bench table and a couple of al
fresco bistro tables mean that you don't have to
wait to get home before you bite into them, and
Lisa will also offer you a cup of tea or coffee to
complete the experience.
The cake theme continues into the gifts
corner, which displays prettily packed cake
decorations and home baking objects, and
other quirky items such as polka dot bunting,
felt and wood ornaments, tea pots and mugs.
Lisa involves her creative siblings in the
business and, in addition to the homemade
cakes and even some of the decorative objects,
the sisters make chutneys from produce from
their own gardens, such as tomatoes and
apples. A small selection of antipasti � olives
and sundried tomatoes � are marinated by Lisa,
and a choice of interesting breads from Paul
Hollywood Artisan Bread Company, including
flavours such as stilton and walnut, and date,
apricot and walnut make a nice takeaway. The
deli also has a range of olive oils, vinegars,
dipping sauces, teas and coffees for sale.
