double test against Boro8217THEY did not finish with a flourish but
Bishop8217s Stortford Ladies second
team can reflect with pride on a
season in which they went up to the
Five Counties Hockey League premier
division.
Stortford had already clinched
promotion by finishing second before
Saturday8217s final game which saw
them draw 0-0 at Cheshunt IIs.
Stortford lost only once and won 14
of their 18 games, finishing behind
unbeaten champions West Herts
seconds, who won 16 games.
Kelly McCarthy forced several saves
from the Cheshunt keeper early on
but the hosts8217 defence remained firm.
Stortford became disheartened and
although their midfield of Tiffany
Rowlands, Laura Tyler and Holly
Lohmeyer battled hard, the visitors
could not play their usual attacking
game.
Stortford were caught on the break
shortly after the interval. This effort
was disallowed for a stick offence.
Meanwhile, Bishop8217s Stortford8217s first
team are still not safe from relegation
after losing 2-0 at Southend in
division one south of the NE14 East
Women8217s Hockey League.
Up to three sides could be relegated,
depending on whether teams from the
National League drop down into the
East League.
Stortford are third from bottom, five
points behind the nearest team with
only two games left.
The first half at Southend was
goalless, but the hosts took the lead
10 minutes after the break with a slick
finish from a short corner.
Southend sealed the points when
their second goal came from a
goalmouth scramble on the hour
mark.
Goals from Charlotte Osborne (2) and
Holly Rollitt Mason clinched a 3-2 win
for second-placed Dunmow Ladies in
division two of the Essex Women8217s
Hockey League.Women8217s hockey round-upCONFIDENCE should be
high in the Bishop8217s
Stortford camp as they
approach this Saturday8217s
home six-pointer against
lowly Bedford Town.Stortford chalked up a
good win at third-placed
Cambridge City five days
ago which left them in
eighth spot in the 12-team
division. Most important-
ly they have a game in
hand over the sides below.
Between two and four
sides could be relegated
from premier division A.
This will depend on rele-
gation from the National
Leagues and promotion
play-offs.
Acting Stortford coach
Tim Smith said: 8220The win
has given us confidence
and we are playing well as
a team. There8217s a lot of
will in the team and we
deserve to stay up.8221
Stortford8217s strong all-
round display frustrated
Cambridge so much that
two oftheir players were
respectively sin-binned
for dissent and for throw-
ing a stick in exasperation
at a shot hitting the bar in
the closing minutes. This
meant they finished with
nine players.
Stortford8217s attack ofvet-
eran Vernon Brown and
youngster Jack Wheaton
looked sharp throughout.
At the other end, man-
of-the-match Robert Smith
marshalled Stortford8217s
defence, while the mid-
field ofAndy Stothard,
Iain Rorison, Tom Bull
and Hector Bevitt-Smith
were tireless and creative.
Stortford went ahead on
25 minutes. Good passing
resulted in Bevitt-Smith
netting from close range.
Stortford captain and
keeper Stewart Smith
made a good diving save to
deny the hosts before his
side doubled their advan-
tage eight minutes after
the break. Wheaton coolly
slipped past the City keep-
er and pushed home.
Cambridge, now rattled,
had few answers to
Stortford8217s slick passing.
Rorison8217s skill caused
problems for the home
defence. After he won a
short corner, his deflected
shot produced a penalty
stroke on 50 minutes.
Stothard converted this
with an unstoppable flick.
Coach Smith added: 8220It
was the best we8217ve played
all season. Our midfield
quartet are a good engine
room and they showed a
lot ofimagination going
forward.8221

from Gareth Lindop sal-
vaged a point for Bishop8217s
Stortford seconds
in a
scrappy 1-1 home draw
against Berkhamsted.
Stortford had wasted
chances before they went
behind to a goal from a
counter-attack shortly
before the break in
Saturday8217s division two
south match.
It looked as ifthe sec-
ond halfwould be like the
first with Stortford ruing
their inability to take
chances before Lindop
converted from a short
corner to make it 1-1.

have won only
two league games in divi-
sion one this season and
their disappointing cam-

are third from bot-
tom after losing 3-1 at
home to Winchmore Hill
& Enfield in division three
south west.
The hosts failed to con-
vert chances in a goalless
first halfbefore poor
defence saw them concede
two goals in the first five
minutes ofthe second
half.
A superb individual
goal on 50 minutes from
Paul Tomlin made it 2-1
before Enfield scored a
third goal five minutes
from the end.
In division five south
west, goals from Olley
