THE BURNHAMS combine many of
the qualities much-loved by city
dwellers visiting the countryside --

seven Burnhams.

In fact you will find a shopping centre that will
not be bettered for many a mile, although
remember that early closing is on Wednesdays.
Throughout the Burnhams, you will find con-
stant reminders of the area's most famous son,
Admiral Lord Nelson, who was born at Burnham
Thorpe.
Associations with Nelson abound in the village
inns bearing his name.
The Lord Nelson, known as the Plough in
Nelson's time, but little changed since, is actual-
ly in Burnham Thorpe, and The Hoste Arms,
named after his protege Captain Hoste, is on
The Green in Burnham Market.
There's also another Lord Nelson in Burnham
Market and The Hero at Burnham Overy Staithe.
Seagoing ships once sailed into Burnham
Overy Town before Burnham Overy Staithe was
constructed, and this must have been an inspi-
ration to the young Nelson before he went to
sea at the age of 12.
As well as five distinctive village churches in
the Burnhams, there is also a picturesque water-
mill at Burnham Overy Staithe, with a windmill
just around the corner which has long been a
favourite with photographers and painters.
