Clearly pretty sardonic, their energised,
threatening and singular-minded
abrasion on art rock filters bile and
humour in equal measure. Hailing from
Hull, almost predictably, they disguise
their articulate rants with repetition and
hide behind obtuse poetry and imagery.
Brilliantly their stuttering, fiery polemic
� which, yes, does bring to mind early
Fall and XX Teens just as Steve Lamacq
so astutely said apparently, but also
Mclusky, Untitled Musical Project, Snow
White amongst others � is so direct as
to be piped directly into your bloodstream like adrenaline. Despite familiar guitar chops it's
so relentless with rapid fire vocal attacks, arcing guitar noise and an unstoppable rhythm
section that it's instantly memorable. Live shows are confrontational fun and it's pretty

THE NEAT
Personally, I feel it's been too long since a decent
hardcore band has featured in these pages.
Virtues are a band I discovered before Christmas,
and the righteous blend of actual anger and
stabbing, roaring crescendos sound excellent
to these tinnitus-addled ears. Hailing from
Peterborough, the unlikely hotbed of the fondly
remembered UK hardcore scene throughout the
late 90s, it seems that it's always been a part of
their lives in some form. "We all share a love
founded in Hardcore. It strengthened our beliefs
in community, in honesty and in music. Hardcore
today can be fickle in my eyes. There are lots of
people I think who enjoy the style of hardcore,
and try to recreate the style of the music without
having the right foundations to build true honest music..." says frontman Marc
Kucharski. Having a listen to them certainly lends credence to the idea that honesty
and passion are mainstays of their music. "Hardcore when we was growing up made
me use something very negative in a constructive way, and I still use that focus to this
very day... my only hope for the future of hardcore is that it still reaches people the
way it reached us. I have no expectations, and no predictions we are just happy being
a part of it, in our own understanding." This attitude and their riotous music is one of
the reasons why no matter how many times I've listened to hardcore, it'll always sound
exciting and fresh to me, provided it's done with heart, as it is here.
