DISCOVERING Old Hunstanton should be a joy
for all.
Being the original Hunstanton, the village
dates back hundreds of years, as does its strong
connections with the Le Strange family, whose
ancestors can be traced back to the time of
William the Conqueror
The church alone is a delight to discover, it has
an aura of tranquillity, being situated in one of the
most beautiful and historic parts of the village
next to the wonderful duckpond, which the chil-
dren will love. Sea Lane offers another chance to
step back in history. Walking from the Lodge
Hotel (which is reputed to be haunted) toward
the sea, you will pass pretty cottages and fisher-
men's yards where one can imagine them mend-
ing their nets and perhaps hiding contraband to
supplement their income.
THE highly-popular Annual Sandcastle
Competition, to be held on the beach at Old
Hunstanton near the lifeboat station on Thursday,
August 6, at 2.30pm, weather permitting, is again
expected to attract a good entry.
The event, now in its 20th year, is organised by
Hunstanton and District Lifeboat Guild.
The competition starts at approximately
2.30pm, and there will be three age groups for
judging. They are: 2-7 years (only children in this
age group can receive help); 8-11 years; and 12+
years, which includes all adults. In all groups,
maximum of two entries per sandcastle.
Entrance fee 50pence per person.
Entrants have 45 minutes to create their sand-
castle.
Any style of sandcastle or object (eg a boat)
can be made in the sand.
Only children in age group 2-7 years can
receive help. One helper only.
If two children in different age groups, or an
adult and a child in the 8-11 age group, wish to
enter together, they must enter the age group of
the older participant.
Only natural objects, like shells and seaweed,
can be used to decorate the sandcastles. The
items must be collected during the 45 minutes of
the competition.
Entrants must use sand from the allocated
square only.
The Lifeboat Guild's efforts throughout the
year are invaluable in raising funds for the
lifeboat, which is housed at Old Hunstanton.
200 original paintings
