ROYAL ASCOT 2008
The greatest race meeting in the worldROYAL ASCOTAFTERNEARLY300years of racing at Ascot, it8217s hardly
surprising that the some of the great legends of the
sport are etched into the racecourse8217s rich history.
Who will ever forget the great battle of Grundy and
Bustino in the 1975 King George, or the sparkling
performances of the likes of Shergar, Dancing Brave
and Generous?
However, legends are quickly made in the world
of flat racing, and there have already been some
magical Ascot moments witnessed on the new track.
Who would have thought that the first two runnings
of The King8217s Stand Stakes, for example, would have
fallen to the visiting champions of Australia? With
their exploits, the likes of Takeover Target and, latterly,
Miss Andretti have added a completely new dimension
to the Royal Meeting.
The old Ascot Winners8217 Enclosure was home to
many an emotional moment but surely few were
matched by the scenes of unbridled joy that greeted
the wonderful globe-trotting mare Ouija Board after
her triumph over her mare counterparts in the 2006
Prince of Wales8217s Stakes. That race goes from strength
to strength and bore witness last year to the best race
anywhere in the world on official ratings, when
Manduro, one of the most versatile and talented
horses of the modern era, took the measure of Dylan
Thomas, who went on to land the King George
and the Arc.10141New legends of the trackP46-52~1.QXP:Layout 1 15/5/08 08:47 Page 50
