Fine Gael councillor Padraic Conneely will not be having
tea, biccies, or any other 8216light refreshment8217 with
Education Minister Mary Hanafin, until she agrees to
talk to him about the GTI.
Cllr Conneely was invited to meet Minister Hanafin,
who will present the BTEI Awards in Galway tomorrow.
The invitation said: 8220Light refreshments will be served
after the ceremony8221.
Cllr Conneely has refused to attend the awards as a
protest against what he calls the minister8217s refusal to
meet with a deputation from the Galway Technological
Institute, which is seeking funding to extend and
renovate the college, despite 8220request after request8221.
8220I have no problem with her presenting the awards,
but what I do have a problem with is that for the last
eight years the GTI has made applications for capital
funding,8221 Cllr Conneely told the
Galway Advertiser
.
8220Rule me out,8221 he continued. 8220I8217m no puppet of the
minister8217s. I will not be attending for light refreshments
when I can have them at home. If she wants to discuss
something about the GTI then I am available. It8217s a good
college. We have more than 900 students and they need
space.82214

Ciaran Cannon
represents a break from
the past and a change for
a new beginning for the
PDs. This is the view
among many members as
the Loughrea man seeks
the position of party
leader.
Galway PD Sen Ciaran
Cannon and Dublin based
Sen Fiona O8217Malley will
contest the leadership of
the PD party, which will
be decided on April 16.
For a number of months
after the 2007 General
Election - which left the
PDs decimated and down
to only two TDs - Galway
West TD Noel Grealish
was asked to take over as
party leader, but declined.
Galway city councillor
and former PD party
chairman Declan
McDonnell was also
approached but declined.
However another
Galwegian, former county
councillor and now
senator, Ciaran Cannon
took up the challenge and
will face Sen Fiona
O8217Malley for the position.
In one sense, the
contenders come as no
surprise. Galway is where
the PDs were founded in
1985 and it remains a
party stronghold. Sen
O8217Malley is the daughter
of the party founder Des
O8217Malley.
Despite becoming a
senator only last year, it is
understood that Sen
Cannon has the edge not
only among Galway PDs,
but nationally as well and
stands a good chance of
beating Sen O8217Malley -
because he represents a
break from the past and a
chance for a battered
party to start anew.
8220Ciaran is seen as a
steady ship and he8217s a
capable performer,8221 Cllr
McDonnell, who is
throwing his support
behind the Loughrea man,
told the
Galway
Advertiser
. 8220He8217s a
different type of
candidate. Previous
leaders came from Fianna
F225il or Fine Gael, but
Ciaran is coming with no
former political
allegiance. That may be
what we need - someone
to give us a new identity.8221
However should Sen
Cannon be elected, he will
not be entitled to sit in the
D225il with other party
leaders, and as such will
be somewhat 8216outside the
loop8217. However Cllr
McDonnell does not see it
as a disadvantage.
8220Mary Harney will
continue as
parliamentary party
leader while Ciaran, if he
is elected, will be the
overall leader,8221 he says.
8220That would leave him
time to rebuild and
reorganise the party -
which will be the main
task - as the Seanad is not
as time consuming as the
D225il.8221
Both Sen Cannon and
Sen O8217Malley will be in
Galway on Monday to
address a PD member
meeting in the Menlo
Park Hotel at 8pm.Cannon to fire new era for PDsCiaran CannonAifric O'Regan, Rhonda Cribber, and Louise Mortin pictured at the launch of Bailico
