News in brief
Sponsored Walk
For the last few years, students
and staff at Chaucer
Technology School have taken
part in an 8 mile sponsored
walk around the countryside of
Canterbury. This year students
nominated Demelza as their
chosen charity and even the
torrential downpour of rain did
not deter the 650 students and
staff from finishing the walk and
raising a splendid 1,808 for
Demelza. "Well done" to all.
Coca Cola Enterprises
(LDS)
Coca Cola Enterprises in
Sidcup recently held a five-a-
side tournament raising 1,556
for Demelza. In total 18 teams
competed, with some coming
from as far as the CCE sites in
Northampton and Peterborough.
As well as the football, money
was raised through a prize raffle
and a barbeque, with DHL
Charlton kindly donating the
food. John Halpin, LDS
Manager said "Hopefully this
will be the first of many
fundraising events. We have
just had three staff complete
the three peaks challenge and
for the next fundraising event,
the staff are planning a skydive
in October."
Gazzabash
Gareth Forge from Maidstone
started fundraising for Demelza
over 11 years ago. Gareth,
founder of Gazzabash, holds
freestyle jazz dances in Bromley
and Orpington on a monthly
basis. Gareth (Gazza) recently
visited Demelza and presented
Area Fundraising Manager
Hayley Richardson with a
cheque for 30,200 which he
has raised over the past two
years. Hayley said, "We are
truly grateful to Gazza for all his
past and future support. To
raise this amount is an amazing
achievement."
Demelza is delighted to receive the
support of Jack Morris of Margate, a
young and up-and-coming
professional super middle weight boxer
who is helping our latest "Make Room
In Your Heart" campaign.
Jack, who trains at the Ring Gym at
London Bridge and lives in Eltham and
has been boxing from an early age,
heard about the work of Demelza and
its new hospice in South London. At a
recent match (which he won) at York
Hall in Bethnal Green, volunteers raised
almost 400 from bucket collections
alone,
which will
go
towards
helping
Jack to
sponsor
a
bedroom in the
new hospice.
Have you ever jumped into a cold
swimming pool and almost jumped out
in shock? Has someone in your home
ever turned on a tap while you are in
the shower, and left you in freezing
water?
If the answer is yes, then you have
some idea of what it can be like in cold
water, but have you ever thought about
swimming for 16 20 hours in water
that is around 13 C (that's very cold by
the way!). Well Victoria Ross has done
just that for Demelza. As part of a 4
man (3 men and her) relay team,
Victoria swam across the English
Channel, a truly remarkable experience
but one that is even more spectacular in
that she is only 15 years old.
Congratulations to Victoria and our
thanks for her support of Demelza.
Genei Phillips and friends organised a
sponsored walk along Eastbourne
seafront to help raise funds for Demelza
Hospice Care for Children. The theme
for the day was red and white and the
girls proudly walked all day along the
front and managed to raise an incredible
340 for their efforts.
