PAMPERING4
Irresistible atmosphere
F
eel the rest of the world
slip away on the
winding approach to
Armathwaite Hall
through woodlands
bordering
Bassenthwaite Lake.
As the vista opens up and the
17th century stately home comes
into view, it becomes clear you're
somewhere very special.
Author Hugh Walpole described
it as a "house of perfect and
irresistible atmosphere" with the
sometimes slate grey, sometimes
cobalt blue lake nudging the edge
of the Hall's 400 acres of deer park,
it's easy to see why.
Skiddaw rears across the Hall's
panorama and Whinlatter Fell,
with its nesting Ospreys, frames
the views from many of the
country house hotel's dining and
relaxation areas. At once
breathtaking and tranquil, a more
happily situated slice of
quintessentially English splendour
is rarely found.
A 5million world class
destination spa joins the many
attractions of Armathwaite Hall.
Newly opened this month, The Spa
was created by the Graves family
with architects A Collier
Associates and Douglas Wallace.
Every detail has been designed
with a bespoke relaxation
experience in mind. The sweeping
reception area boasts water and
light features carried through to
the rest of the expansive spa.
The purity of the air, the beauty
of the woodlands and park are
reflected in the natural stone, slate
and wood interior.
On ground level, the spacious
changing rooms lead to a
breathtaking infinity pool with
waterfall features and adjoining
wallow pool. Floor to ceiling
windows opening to a decked
terrace and outdoor hot tub afford
views of the lake and parklands.
A thermal suite opens up beyond
the pool complete with hydro-pool,
overhead duck shower, steam
room, tropical showers complete
with aroma essences, rain-dance
shower and aroma room. Heated
benches provide even further
relaxation and a roomy sauna with
views over a soon-to-be-finished
sensory garden complete the
exquisite de-stress labyrinth.
Moving upstairs, the day spa and
treatment rooms spread out
around a luxurious lounge area.
Here, guests can enjoy lunch or
head to the new brasserie, to be
completed by Easter.
Throughout the spa the finish is
of an extraordinary quality. Every
aspect of the relaxation experience
has been overseen by Operations
Manager, Jenni Paling, who came
to Armathwaite after launching an
exclusive spa in Ireland.
"The first time I saw The Spa
under construction I knew it was
world class. This really is a
destination retreat," she said.
To the right of the spa lounge a
manicure, pedicure and makeup
treatment facility offers an
opportunity for spa guests to chat
whilst they are pampered. And
beyond, there are 10 treatment
rooms including a double
treatment room with hydrotherapy
bath to accommodate couples.
Beyond the treatment rooms is
the Hush Room a balcony-side
oasis complete with mini beds.
Jenni has handpicked high-
calibre staff for the Spa, trained in
the latest treatment therapies. The
Spa will carry [comfort zone] and
Terrak, from French skincare
experts Thalgo. It is only found at
the world's most luxurious spas
and includes unique massages and
products, inspired by nature.
A dance and exercise studio and
gym complete with state of the art
Life Fitness Elevation Series
equipment round off the spa.
Each member will be inducted
and supported by instructors and
issued with a high-tech USB band
to record personal fitness
programmes and goals.
Twelve newly refurbished spa
bedrooms have been created close
to the spa to enable guests to pad
down for treatments in the fluffy
robes and slippers awaiting them.
Wall-mounted plasma televisions
are in each spa room bathroom.
The splendour extends through
the Hall, with traditional lounge
and dining areas, conference
facilities and function rooms, plus
terraces with lake views perfect for
afternoon tea.
An award-winning restaurant
serves a six-course table d'hote
menu in the evenings and a four-
course table d'hote menu for lunch.
From the 2,000-year-old yew tree
in its grounds, to the antiques and
wood panelling, Armathwaite Hall
reflects grandeur of a bygone age.
As a four-star hotel owned
and run by the Graves family,
the Hall has 42 bedrooms each
offering an individual aspect and
individual character. A croquet
lawn and tennis courts are situated
in the Hall grounds and Trotters
World of Animals wildlife park is
close by with free entry to guests.
Activity programmes include
luxury chauffeured picnics, clay
pigeon shooting and fishing.
Armathwaite Hall embodies
tranquility and luxury.
The Spa is open for day spa
guests, residents and members. For
