"A baptism of fire" is how farmer Norman Steel described the inauguration of his new Claas Tucano 430 and it's new
6.6m header. "Considering the conditions the combine performed well, it is fitted with slightly oversized tyres which
assisted with traveling. The throughput was good for the conditions so the potential for more on better conditions will
save time and fuel, and allow us to pick days to cut, when drier etc. I was amazed to find that the Claas Tucano actually
traveled on wet land where a tractor and trailer could not," says Norman. "I am pleased with the 22 'Auto contour
header, it stops the tractors and trailers going off onto the straw. We bale straw and the baler does not like picking it
up when it has been crossed over.
We found that the width of header was making a better job, it followed the contours of the ground very well.
Norman farms a mixed farm at Ayton Cocklaw, Near Eyemouth.
Alan Taylor originated from a background of contracting, as his father had his own business for many years. Four
years ago Alan along with Ben his son decided to branch out on their own as Agricultural Contractors. Originally they
had had a Claas Tucano in the family firm. Last season they
purchased a Tucano 430 from Rickerby's. "Considering the bad
season which we experienced it performed very well, Alan tells
me."It is fitted with extra large wheels, and traveled very well
in bad conditions. We had more throughput than with our older
machine, and it follows the contours particularly well. We have
experienced a significant fuel saving with the new Tucano too.
It maneuvers very well from farm to farm and negotiates lanes
and field gateways with no problem. Servicing the Claas Tucano
in a morning is much simpler than with the previous model. We
find the service and backup from Rickerby's is second to none
whatever machine is involved."
Kibblesworth Grange dairy farm stands amidst 500 acres of arable land overlooking the Team Valley. It is farmed in
partnership by two brothers and their sons. They originally had a Claas Lexion 420 for which they got a good price in
part exchange for the Claas Tucano, which they had on demonstration after recommendation by their Nephew."We have
been very impressed by the Tucano it is an amazing machine which will handle most difficult conditions, none more so
than last years disastrous season, " continues Mr Askew. We had lighter smaller tyres on our machine 680 x 42 instead
of 800 x 35, the machine is narrower but taller, which makes it good for accessing 12 foot gateways. The Claas Tucano
travelled well and didn't bottom out, it has good traction and clearance, altering the vario cutter bar was easy. Visually
sitting in the cab was superb even with the 22 foot header you can see both corners. The power is good, you can
offload three and three quarter tonnes of barley going up hill. Accessing the combine for cleaning is easy, just lift the
back of the hood up and clean out, the new shape is easy to maintain.
New products can be ten a penny but the Claas 950 Speedstar is ahead of the game. Local contractor Graham Prudham
is extremely impressed with it's capabilities and performance. "A lot of thought has gone into the Claas Speedstar 950
to make it such an excellent machine. It is economical to run, easy to maintain, the output is high, adjusting the chop
length is simplicity itself as it can all be done from the cab. Attachments are very easy for wholecrop etc. The cab itself
is very comfortable with excellent visibility, altogether a very well thought out and robust machine ahead of it's time.
As well as contracting I.J.&G.Prudham, farm 250 acres and fatten 250 bulls per year and have 50 suckler cows.
Farm Manager Philip Harkness has seen many machines come and go during his thirty years at Harehope Estate, Near
Alnwick. The estate consists of 2,000 acres of arable land alongside 150 suckler cows, and 1,000 low ground sheep
and 2,000 scotch blackface. "All the Lexion combines which we have had here have been on terra tracks. We had the
first 460 in the uk, and progressed from that to a 560 and now the 570tt. Terra tracks are vital here," continues Philip,
we have a lot of steep hills, and sandy land and the Terra tracks leave no imprint on the land, unlike the wheeled
machines. It has been a challenging first season for the Claas 570tt but I can say that it handled the adverse conditions
well. It was one of the few combines around here that did not have to be pulled through. We had Wheat totally
submerged by floods and within 4 days the Claas 570tt was harvesting the same crops.
