CITY OF SAN MATEO,
Housing Element Update,
the City of San Mateo is pro-
posing revisions to the
Housing Element of the
General Plan. As required by
State Law, the City is
required to update and
receive State certification
every 5 years. The current
deadline to receive State
certification for this Housing
Element update is June 30,
2009. Required Approvals:
A. Negative Declaration to
assess Environmental
Impacts. B. General Plan
Amendment to the Housing
Element consistent with the
requirements of State Law.
C. Zoning Code Amendment
to allow Emergency Shelters
as a Permitted Use in C2
and C3 Zoning Districts.
Housing Element law
requires local governments
to adequately plan to meet
their existing and projected
housing needs including
their fair share of the region-
al housing need. The law
recognizes that in order for
the private sector to ade-
quately address housing
needs and demand, local
governments must adopt
land-use plans and regulato-
ry schemes that provide
opportunities for, and do not
unduly constrain, housing
development. The Housing
Element update affects the
entire City of San Mateo
