WELSH WONDERS!
Ladies' golf in Wales is on a high after bright end to season
T
HE elite of Welsh women's
amateur golf will look back on
2009 with a great deal of pride
following an impressive finish
to the season and it looks like 2010
is shaping up to be a great year, too.
The Welsh ladies' side successfully defend-
ed the Ladies' Home Internationals at Irvine,
beating Scotland by way of a truly brilliant
performance in the closing singles matches.
It meant a second Home Internationals title
success in 99 years for Wales' leading female
amateurs following last year's impressive
showing. Wales will now be going for a
unique hat-trick when the event returns to
Whitchurch next summer.
Paying tribute to a highly-respected young
Welsh team, Scottish captain Lesley Nicholson
described them as a "very strong side, even
stronger than last year".
BOOST
Another huge boost to ladies' golf in the
Principality came with the news that four
young Welsh girls have been included in the
provisional Great Britain and Ireland squad for
the Curtis Cup, taking place in the United
States next year.
Amy Boulden, Gemma Bradbury, Lucy
Gould and Rhian Wyn Thomas have made
the 20-strong squad at Essex Country Club
in Massachusetts in the United States.
GB&I captain Mary McKenna said: "I am
really delighted with this very talented and
young squad. It is a great incentive for the
girls to work really hard over the winter to
be ready for the early season selection."
Wales' Tegwen Matthews will continue in
her role as Team Manager for the match,
scheduled for June 11-13, 2010.

Tie-in with Welsh waste management company will see new `footprint' measures brought in
The 2010 Ryder Cup will be the most environmentally
friendly in history following a tie-in with waste manage-
ment company GD Environmental Services.
All packaging for the service of food will be biodegrad-
able, and food waste and biodegradable food packaging,
crockery and cutlery will be separated for composting.
All paper, cardboard, glass, plastic, wood, metal,
cabling, fabric and aluminium will be separated either on
site or through sifting at a depot for re-processing into
recycled products and materials.
Non-recyclable materials such as polystyrene will be
banned altogether. Dr Simon Bilsborough from the Welsh
Assembly Government's Sustainable Development
Branch, said: "It is good to see a local Welsh company
taking a central role in this vital work."
2010 RYDER CUP WILL BE `ECO FRIENDLY'
Welsh PGA champ
targets Euro Tour
JASON POWELL has set his
sights on a European Tour
place after coming through
a six-hole play-off to win the
Ryder Cup Wales 2010 Welsh
National PGA Championship
at Ashburnham.
"This is another stepping
stone and it has given me the
confidence to compete against
the best," said the former
Cardiff golfer. "I finished sixth
last year and was hoping to do
well but didn't really expect to
win especially when I bogeyed
15 and 16 and thought I had
lost it and was going to lose
by one."
Powell, who honed his game
as a youngster at Llanishen
in Cardiff, added: "I thought it
was all over the 16th during
the play-off but I played an
unbelievable shot from the
rubbish and was pleased to
just get on the green."

Aberdovey work
`simply stunning'
ONE of the world's leading
experts in golf course
maintenance has praised the
work being done at Aberdovey
in Gwynedd.
Lee Penrose, the senior
ecologist at the Sports Turf
Research Institute (STRI), says
the changes at the course are
definitely for the better.
"The views standing on any
of the tees on the site are
special, the landscape is as
good as any links golf course
you will see," said Penrose.
"We are restoring something
which is already there offering
a great experience for any
golfer apart from just the
tees, fairways and greens.
"The views are as good as
any links course you will see.
There are issues because it is
a conservation site, but that is
what makes it such a special
place to come."
