Challenge: Adapting the interior design
within the framework of the building's
dynamic architecture, which includes
a curvilinear glass faade and two side
17-story wings intersecting a 26-story
tower that together create the illusion
of the building soaring like the curves
on a ship's sails. The number of elevator
lobbies and how to link them together
to create an entry to the bar/restaurant
that is connected to the main hotel entry.
Solution: Approached the challenge as
a design opportunity, especially with
regard to guest-room layouts. The
unusual shapes, dimensions and propor-
tions of the rooms and corridors were
addressed by clever space planning that
only an experienced hotel designer and
interior architect could successfully
accomplish within program require-
ments. We rationalized functional space
by the orientation of spaces within the
building. Additionally, the use and
combination of materials created
seductive and unique spaces.

Challenge: Transition smoothly from the
building's architecture and aesthetics to
the concepts and ideals of the project.
Solution: Situated at the base of a very
traditional-style condominium tower,
Holeman & Finch creates a distinct
threshold, wine and charcuterie coolers,
that one passes through and that openly
and honestly distinguishes when you
have "arrived." This threshold marks
the crux of the project, where you sit in
the catbird seat, seeing all of the options
available to you: the bar, the dining area
and the kitchen. It also serves an edu-
cational purpose with the glass coolers
educating the guests to the organic
and homemade qualities of the food at
Holeman & Finch.

Challenge: Balance the requirement for
product display and flexibility while
also maintaining the integrity, volume
and texture of the existing building's
structure and skin.
Solution: To allow the existing brick and
structure to form the backdrop for the
carpet display. Utilization of natural light
and the selection of neutral colors allow
the carpet samples and building textures
to stand out.
