10 top tips when looking for a photographer
1. Is the person you are thinking of commissioning a full
time, seven-days-a-week professional photographer?
2. Is he or she qualified? And at what level? Are they
registered with a proper institute? The best two are the BIPP
(British Institute of Professional Photography) or the MPA
(The Master Photographers Association).
3. Do they work from a studio or home?
4. How many photographers will be there on the day (two is
the norm, this will give the advantage or formal and informal
images. One person can't do both).
5. If commissioning a digital studio, the most important
question is, do they the capture their images in RAW format?
This will give you a good indication as to the experience and
the quality of the studio. If they only capture in JPEG,
beware they do not have the same quality control.
6. Meet your photographer in person. Don't take a
chance on a stranger that you might not get on with.
7. See examples of their work.
8. The problem with picking a package. Say, for
example, a photographer is booked to take 60
photographs. What happens if you want 65 pictures?
Look for a studio that covers the day, maybe they can
give you 600 images you can choose from? It's your
album after all.
9. Ask what type of cameras they use. If using digital, a
minimum requirement wants to be 12MGB, capturing in
RAW format. If still film, a medium format camera.
10. How long have they been in business? This will
indicate experience if nothing else.
