used for coasteering. We
recommend that you team up with
a guide from an adventure centre
both for your safety and to ensure
that you don't end up exploring
protected wildlife habitats and
disturbing wildlife illegally. Before
you book, check the centre is a
member of the Pembrokeshire
Outdoor Charter Group which
means they offer fun activities
while respecting the environment.
Go with a guide! Coasteering
is great fun, particularly on a sunny
day with blue skies and a few small
waves, but it should not be
underestimated. A sudden change
in the weather, tides or swell
conditions can turn any trip into a
serious undertaking where even
small injuries can cause great
difficulty of escape from the cliff
base. All guides are trained in first
aid and rescue techniques plus they
know all the escape routes so the
message is go with a guide!
Where do I sign up? Many of
the outdoor activity centres listed
on the left offer guided coasteering
sessions at a variety of levels /
locations. They'll give you all the
essential safety equipment
including wetsuits, helmets and
buoyancy aids, plus the knowledge
to appreciate the special habitats
that you'll be seeing from a unique
perspective.
Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum's
Activities Liaison Officer Tom
Luddington reveals the thrills
of Pembrokeshire's most
famous coastal activity...
Coastal'eering, coastal rearing,
co-steering I have heard it called
many things!
"It's Coasteering!" (think of it as
mountaineering, but by the coast!)
This is extreme rock-pooling! Get a
full wetsuit, buoyancy aid and
helmet on, team up with a
professional guide, and go for it!
The activity involves a combination
of scrambling, swimming and
exploring along the base of the
cliffs. Days out can range from flat
calm trips into forgotten caves and
optional jumping off cliffs, to
adventure swimming in the waves
and white water at the base of the
cliffs. Try it, you'll love it! Honestly...
Location Location Location...
The Pembrokeshire coast
provides a superb setting for this
activity with a huge variety of
locations from vertical cliffs dropping
straight into the sea to sheltered
coves and caves suitable to explore
whatever the weather/season. The
rocks, wildlife and un-spoilt
environment are some of the main
attractions, all of which need to be
respected to allow sustainable use of
the very special locations currently

Coast-what-ing?!
Things to
consider when
coasteering in
Pembrokeshire:
 GO FOR IT! Suitable for
ages 8 to 80+! Don't let your
fears stand in the way of
your dreams! Coasteering is
one of the best outdoor
activities in the world so
book today!
 CAUTION is required.
Organise any coasteering
through the activity centres
listed on the left, it is safer as
they have the equipment and
local knowledge that is vital,
and can pitch the activity to
suit your ability, look after
you, and avoid sensitive
wildlife habitats.
 HAVE RESPECT! If you see
seals or cliff nesting birds
then leave them in peace.
 ALWAYS leave the area as
you found it, or if you come
across litter, take it with you!
 CONTACT the RSPCA on
08705 555 999 if you see any
wildlife which you think is
injured or in distress or let
your guide know and ask
them to report it.
Blue rayed limpet.
About the size of a
pea, and usually found
on the fronds of kelp
seaweeds - you'll need
to get wet to see one
of these!
Strawberry sea
anemone. Harder to
find than the more
common beadlet
anemone, these
animals have long
tentacles for collecting
food which they
retract at low tide.
Limpets and barnacles.
The limpets are like
snails but they eat
seaweed, while the
barnacles attach
themselves to the rock
by their heads and
wave their legs about
when the tide is in to
catch food.
Colourful sponges and
delicate seaweeds live
in the coasteering
environment.
The Coastguard can give information on tides and
weather at any time of the year call them on
01646 690909.
Coastguard Angie Smith said: "We're here 24
hours a day, seven days a week to help people enjoy
our coast safely.
"We ask coasteering operators and all other
organised activity groups - to let us know when and
where they are going out and how many people
they're taking: just fax us on 01646 697287.
"To the public we say have fun and be sensible
don't go out on your own, go with an organised
group and wear safety gear."
