By Car...
The main motorway connection into Scotland is the M6
which connects the north-west of England with the M74 at
the south-western border. There are a number of alternatives
including the A1, which connects Newcastle with Edinburgh,
and the A68 and A7, which provide scenic routes through
southern Scotland. Visitors bringing their own car from
overseas require a full international driving licence, green-card
insurance and the car registration documents.
By Coach...

many of the major UK cities. Many of these services run daily
throughout the year, some with overnight journeys.

By Rail...
There is a fast, efficient cross-border railway service from
England and Wales to Scotland. The journey from London takes
about four hours, thirty minutes to Edinburgh and five hours to
Glasgow with regular services throughout the day. There are
also direct services from London Kings Cross to Aberdeen and
Inverness and good links from other main English cities such as
Birmingham and Manchester. GNER operate on the east coast
main line between London (Kings Cross Station) Edinburgh,
Aberdeen and Inverness. Virgin operate services on the west
coast main line (Euston Station) to Glasgow.

By Ferry...
Ferries to Scotland are also available from Northern Ireland to
the ports of Stranraer, Troon and Cairnryan on Scotland's south-
west coast. There are frequent ferry services from the continent
to the north of England within easy reach of the Scottish
Borders. Newcastle is approximately two-and-a-half hours by car
from Edinburgh, and Hull is approximately five hours.

There is an excellent internal air network with year-round daily
flights connecting the islands and several regional airports quickly
and conveniently to the main airports of Aberdeen, Edinburgh,

By Car...
Scotland has an excellent road network with motorways and dual
carriageway roads linking many of the main cities and towns as well
as many signposted `Tourist Routes' which offer scenic alternatives.
Driving is on the left side of the road. There are no toll roads but
you will be required to pay to cross the Forth and Tay bridges. The
holder of an overseas driving licence may, for a period of up to one
year, drive a motor vehicle in Britain.
By Rail...
First ScotRail operates four services per hour between Edinburgh
and Glasgow, with a journey-time of forty eight minutes. Other
express services link Edinburgh and Glasgow with Stirling, Perth,
Dundee, Aberdeen and Inverness. Scotland's rail network covers
almost all major towns.

With 130 inhabited islands, ferries are important. Caledonian
MacBrayne ferries sail to 22 islands off the West Coast and in the

There is a good network of coach services in Scotland. Scottish
