COMMENTARY NFL
A
ny day now, Brett Favre
will return to the NFL.
The Minnesota Vikings
start selling single-game
tickets on July 20. Favre will surely
be there to spur thousands of sales
for one of the few franchises that
need a pitch man. The most hated
man in Minnesota for 16 seasons
will soon be a Viking pending his
expected contract signing.
A Green Bay Packer quarter-
backing the Vikings would be worse
than Dallas passer Roger Staubach
replacing Washington's Sonny Jur-
gensen. Green Bay-Minnesota has
surpassed the Redskins-Cowboys
rivalry. Green Bay fans buy Min-
nesota season tickets just to come
to one game. They attend Vikings
games when the Packers aren't play-
ing just to razz the latter. Now that's
a feud.
If Favre burned a bridge last year
when suddenly leaving retirement
to play for the New York Jets, he'll
truly spit on Packers fans by playing
for their hated foe. Today's athletes
consider themselves NFL players,
not Packers or Vikings, but this one
will be personal.
Favre may be forgiven by Pack-
ers fans in time, but not on Nov. 1
when the Vikings visit Lambeau
Field. Tickets are already selling
online for more than $300. That
is, if you can really get one. Pack-
ers no-shows sometimes number
in the low single digits. Mostly flu
victims that couldn't crawl through
the frozen tundra.
The signs of Favre's second come-
back are undeniable. He reportedly
placed a $30,000 deposit on a condo
near the Vikings training facility.
Maybe Favre just wants a crash pad
nearMallofAmerica.Meanwhile,Dr.
James Andrews, who operated on
Favre'sshoulderintheoffseason,said
the passer wants to join Minnesota.
Minnesota won the NFC North
last season at 10-6 before a first-
round playoff exit. Tarvaris Jackson
is not the answer. Neither is former
Redskins passer Sage Rosenfels.
Frankly, neither is Favre for more
than a season or two.
Favre finished miserably last sea-
son with New York. The arm injury
was part, but the 39-year-old passer
is living off a career more than
recent success. Three of his last
four seasons were average, includ-
ing last year with 15 touchdowns
and 15 interceptions.
No matter Favre missed offsea-
son camps. The Vikings have waited
for him longer than Navy wives dur-
ing deployment.
An old Favre is better than any-
one the Vikings have. Favre wants
to play. The NFL and TV networks
wants him to stay.
Once more, we're reminded
careers seldom end gracefully.

Stallworth says he
drank up to four shots
before car accident
MIAMI Cleveland Browns wide
receiver Donte' Stallworth told
police he drank up to four shots
of premium tequila while partying
with friends at a Miami Beach club
but did not feel drunk in the hours
before he struck and killed a pe-
destrian with his car. In a recorded
interview with police, Stallworth
said he drank some tequila from
Braylon Edwards' table and later
bought some shots himself. Lab
tests later showed Stallworth had
a blood-alcohol level of .126, above
Florida's .08 limit. AP

La Russa quietly drops
suit against Twitter
TORONTO Blue Jays general man-
ager J.P. Ricciardi says he's willing
to listen to offers for ace Roy Hal-
laday.
"I don't think anything has
changed, I just think, 'You know
what, why not listen? The worst we
can say is no,"' Ricciardi told The
Canadian Press
on Tuesday.
"If someone
wants Roy and
they're willing to
blow us away, we'd
be willing to listen,
that's all I'm say-
ing. That doesn't
mean we'd trade
him, that doesn't
mean we're looking to trade him.
All it means is we'd be willing to
listen."
Halladay is 10-2 with a 2.79 ERA
in 16 starts. He'll be paid $14.25
million this year and his contract
expires after the 2010 season, when
he's set to earn $15.75 million.
The Blue Jays began Tuesday at
43-41, seven games back of Boston
in the AL East and six out of the wild
card -- behind six other teams.
Cards' La Russa drops
lawsuit against Twitter
ST. LOUIS St. Louis Cardinals man-
ager Tony La Russa has quietly
dropped his lawsuit against the
social networking site Twitter Inc.
A one-paragraph statement filed
June 26 with the U.S. District Court
in San Francisco said La Russa had
dropped all claims
-- and that San
Francisco-based
Twitter did not
compensate him
in exchange. It
also said he could
not refile the same
complaint.
Calls and e-
mailstoLaRussa's
attorney, Gregory McCoy, and to
Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, were
not returned Tuesday.
La Russa's lawsuit, originally filed
in San Francisco Superior Court
in May and transferred to federal
court on June 5, alleged trademark
infringement, "cybersquatting" and
misappropriation of his name. It
claimed an unauthorized page that
used his name caused emotional
distress by making light of his DUI
charge and the deaths of two Cardi-
nals pitchers in recent seasons. AP
