FOOTBALL: LATEST NEWS IN COUNTDOWN TO THE NEW BLUE SQUARE PREMIER SEASON
LLiinngg iinn
wwiitthh aa
pplleeddggeeMARTIN Ling has vowed to bring
League football back to Cambridge
United after signing a three-year deal
as the club's new manager this week.
The former Leyton Orient boss, who
has Paul Carden as his player-assistant
manager, took charge of the team for
the first time in their 1-0 defeat by a
youthful Liverpool XI in a pre-season
frienly at the R Costings Abbey
Stadium on Tuesday.
The new boss believes United have
great potential to grow during his reign.
He said: "If I was going to drop out of
the League as a manager, it had to be
with a club that could progress.
Cambridge United is that club. They're
in the Conference now and have been out
of the League for four years.
"But with the right infrastructure and
the right balance of players and
coaching, I'm confident we can get
back where we belong.
"Like at Orient, I see this as a long-term
project, but we can be a top-five club
here next year. That could be first or fifth
and if you get in the play-offs you've still
got a chance of promotion.
"I haven't got a hand around my
neck saying it has got to come next
year, but I've signed a three-year
contract to build the club and by then
we'll have a better product than we
have today.
"The last two managers have got to
play-off finals, so in that way they're a
hard act to follow. But they haven't
finished the job because United are
still not a League club, so there's a little
bit of room for me to improve on."
Ling said he was looking forward to
working with Carden having seen
United in action in their last two
friendlies, both 1-1 home draws
against a West Ham XI and Barnet.
He said: "I know Paul as a player and
he's a big part of where we want to go.
"Paul will be the first to say he's
learning the job and my way will be
different to Gary (Brabin), but he's
open to new things.
"He's a player first, but his
involvement as assistant manager is
massively important as well.
"We'll work out our strengths and
weaknesses as we go along, but I read an
article in which Paul recently said he
wanted to work with someone who was
open and honest. He'll find that from me
and I'm sure we'll get on famously."
STEVE Fallon wants to add
two new players to his
squad before the start of the
Blue Square Premier
campaign following their
1-0 pre-season friendly
defeat by Colchester United
at the Glass World Stadium
on Tuesday.
The Stutes impressed in
defence, but found it hard
going up front and were
picked off by an Anthony
Wordsworth's free-kick
seven minutes from time.
"We're still looking for one
or two to strengthen us,
we're a couple of players
short," said Fallon.
"That's not to say the
players that start would let
us down, but we do feel if
we are to continue last
season's form we need to
get a couple of players who
can come in and go straight
into the side."
Histon gave a trial to Lee
Smith and the Bury Town
winger impressed in the first
half and is likely to have
another chance to prove
himself.
"He did okay," added Fallon.
"He showed a few nice
touches, he works hard and
he's got a chance of playing
at a higher level.
"He's on contract at Bury
but they've given us
permission for him to play a
couple of games."
Fallon said of Stutes'
performance against
Colchester: "I thought first
half we did quite well. We
looked strong defensively
and had a look at a few
things. In the second half we
made a few changes and it
became more open."
Histon are inviting fans to
the Glass World at 11.30am
on Saturday to view the new
home and away kits, watch
a training session and meet
the players.
Fallon targets new duo
to boost Stutes' squad
THE first local derby action
of the new campaign is due
to take place at the R
Costings Abbey Stadium on
Monday when Cambridge
United take on Histon in the
Cambs Professional Cup
final (7.45pm).
It will be the final chance for
United's new boss Martin
Ling and his Stutes'
counterpart Steve Fallon to
run the rule of their troops
before the start of the Blue
Square Premier season the
following weekend.
United have a friendly on
Saturday when they travel
to United Counties League
St Ives Town (3pm).
