W
ith the weather forecast indicating
rain on its way and wet tyres in
short supply, a two tyre rule was
called to make it fair and safe as possible for
all the teams at Clay Pigeon on April 27th
Qualifying got under way on a cold and
damp track but the track soon came up to
speed as the teams started to pull times in the
39 seconds bracket. It was close at the top as
5 tenths covered the top 9 teams at the end
of qualifying. Autotekk qualified 1st with a
39.34s followed by Dxi Wild (39.41s), Alpha
RPM (39.43s) and AJB (39.65s).
The grid formed up with DDK being put to
the back due a technical infringement. The
teams proceeded on their rolling up lap with
Autotekk setting the pace and Dxi Wild eager
to make a flying start to be the first kart to
Billy's Blind. The Union Jack flag was shown
and all 25 teams set out to the first corner and
cleanly made it through.
After 15 minutes of racing the top 5 teams
were all Super Pros. Dxi Wild had taken
the lead and after 19 laps were followed by
Autotekk (-0.18s) and Alpha RPM (-0.83s).
The top 3 Experts were Titan Motorsport
(-9.16s from the leaders) then JRJ-EXE Racing
(-9.24s) and A to Z Racing (-9.51s). DDK had
moved from last place to lead the Clubmans
with Dxi Child 2nd and Mslaren battling it out
for 3rd in class with Chatburn Challengers.
Titan Motorsport retired shortly afterwards
with a broken yoke on their chassis.
One hour gone and Autotekk had retaken
the lead from Dxi Wild (-3.06s) followed by
Alpha RPM (-3.37s) and AJB firmly in 4th.
The Experts were now being led by JRJ-EXE
Racing with Team AFT moving up to 2nd and
A to Z Racing still 3rd in class, DDK were on
a flier as they were now 6th overall and first in
Clubman from Chatburn Challengers closely
followed by Dxi Child.
Around the 90 minutes mark a few teams
opted to make an early fuel and driver change
to miss the mad rush while 15 minutes later
saw the rest of the teams start their changes.
AJB came in under weight and were penalised
10 laps along with Alpha RPM. Was this due
to the fact that the weight limit had been
increased for 2008 from 180 to 182kg?
Dxi Child had a collision with Mslaren at
the 2 hour 30 minutes mark causing them
both to return to the pits with flat tyres as
they had popped off the rims, dropping them
down the pack.
At the halfway point Alpha RPM had a front
stub axle bearing collapse but were back on
the track regardless. First overall and leading
Super Pro were Dxi Wild (268 laps) from
Autotekk (-1 lap). Third in Super Pro but
6th overall was Balljoint, with Expert led by
JRJ-EXE Racing from Team AFT and A to Z
Racing. Clubman leaders DDK were now up
to 3rd overall (-3 laps). Chatburn Challengers
and Mslaren were next in class.
At 4 hours 30 minutes Kartostrophic who
had been having problems all day retired,
having used the meeting as a test session.
They were closely followed into retirement
by SRC who collided with a barrier after an
incident with another kart.
With 20 minutes left the top 10 positions
were Autotekk (490 laps), Dxi Wild (488
laps), DDK (485 laps), Team AFT (484
laps), Balljoint (484 laps), JRJ-EXE Racing
(484 laps), A to Z Racing (482 laps), RGM
Lodgecrest (478 laps), Grassroots (477 laps)
and Chatburn Challengers (476 laps).
Five minutes later and the MSA Steward
and the Clerk of the Course were looking
worried as fog had set in and was becoming
worse by the second. This unfortunately
caused the chequered flag to be shown 10
minutes early for safety reasons. Autotekk
took the win followed by Dxi Wild, DDK and
Team AFT.
