New liberty safeguards
The Mental Health Act Deprivation of
Liberty Safeguards were introduced on
April 1 2009, along with a code of
conduct for professionals.
They apply in all settings where a person
with learning disabilities could have control
exercised over them by professionals.
Michael Sergeant describes the new
safeguards and suggests that while they
may be challenging to implement, they
should provide additional protection for
vulnerable adults with learning disabilities.
