Q: My husband and I are having an ongoing
discussion about a quote from President
John F. Kennedy. My husband claims JFK
said "There were never more brains in the
White House than when Ben Franklin dined
alone." I say JFK. was referring to Thomas
Jefferson. Can you please clear this up for
us? -- J.M., Holbrook, Mass.
A: During a dinner honoring Nobel prize
winners of the Western hemisphere on
April 29, 1962, President Kennedy made
the following remarks: "I think this is the
most extraordinary collection of talent,
of human knowledge, that has ever been
gathered at the White House -- with
the possible exception of when Thomas
Jefferson dined alone." I hope you had
a nice dinner riding on the outcome of
this.
Q: What was the name given to gladiators
who carried a net and trident? -- V.L.,
Plainview, Texas
A: A retiarius (plural retiarii; literally
meaning "net-man" or "net-fighter").
Along with the net and trident, the
retiarius usually carried a dagger. He
wore little armor, maybe an arm and
shoulder guard. Usually, the retiarius
fought a heavily armed secutor. While
the net-fighter lacked protective gear, he
had speed and agility in his favor.
