Watersports
There are two first-class marinas in Torquay and
Brixham, with excellent onshore facilities including
harbourside restaurants and marine stores selling
chandlery and specialist clothing and equipment.
Events are held throughout the year, including
sailing and rowing races, powerboat races, and
many more national sailing championships.
Torquay, Paignton, Brixham and Babbacombe
each have their own yacht clubs and 2009 sees
the welcome return of Torbay Week, a combined
regatta taking place between the 21st - 26th
August. More information is available at
www.torbayweek.co.uk which details a week
packed with on and offshore events and activities.
Sailing boats and sailboards can be hired from
several places, with expert tuition for beginners
available. Special parts of the English Riviera are
given entirely over to windsurfers, water-skiers and
jet skiers. Skiers can hire speedboats or there are
launching slips for people who wish to bring
their own.
To begin your fun-filled water sports holiday, visit
one of our Tourist Information Centres to pick up a
leaflet with useful addresses, numbers, and ideas
for more aquatic activities.
For those who enjoy a more casual approach to
getting around on the water, many beaches and
coves have rowing dinghies, kayaks and pedaloes
for hire.
The beauty of the area can be best seen from the
sea on one of the many pleasure cruises running
between the three towns.
Water Skiing
Diving
As well as activities on the surface of the water,
there is also excitement to be found beneath the
waves.
Tor Bay has long been favourable to the diving
community due to its natural, sheltered conditions
and abundance of small coves. The relative
warmth of the Gulf Stream brings a marvellously
diverse population of wildlife that settle in the
nutrient-rich underwater topography. Divers can
delight in the weird and wonderful treasures of the
sea bed such as corals, sponges, sea anenomes,
fish and marine crustaceans.
Popular underwater diving locations include Fairy
Cove, by Paignton Harbour, Babbacombe Beach
and Brixham Breakwater. For the more seasoned
and adventurous diver, Shoalstone Reef, Thatchers
Rock, Orestone Rock and Berry Head offer
challenging but rewarding sub-aqua experiences.
The English Riviera is fortunate to have several
centres devoted to diving tuition, trips and
equipment hire that can accommodate divers at
all levels of experience. Some offer P.A.D.I. courses
and certification.
