Flying high: Dave Mutter with Ann-Marie Maskall who are
planning their wedding in Cyprus in May
`We were fated to
get married in a
foreign country'
ANN-MARIE Maskall and David
Mutter's relationship has been
dominated by events taking place
abroad.
They met while on holiday in
Tenerife, David planned to
propose in Paris (although he
ended up popping the question in
Newcastle Airport) and now they
are about to get married abroad.
The couple, who live in Carlisle,
met in 2000 and have chosen to get
married in Cyprus on May 12.
Ann-Marie said: "There are lots
of advantages to getting married
abroad. You are guaranteed warm
weather and hopefully sunshine
and you can have a holiday too."
After meeting on holiday the
pair kept in touch and visited
each other at weekends until Ann-
Marie, originally from Fleetwood
in Lancashire, started applying
for jobs in Carlisle. She now
works as nursery manager at
Kingmoor Nursery.
It was on a trip to Paris in
December 2006 that David, an
engineering manager from
Anthorn, proposed although they
didn't actually make it to France
before popping the question.
Ann-Marie, 27, explains: "David
put the ring in his pocket but then
panicked over whether it would
set off the security alarms.
"We had to go and finish our
drinks before we could go through
security and it was while we were
in the lounge that he proposed
because he was so worried."
David, 26, told Ann-Marie that
they were going to have to start
saving and that he didn't want
her to be his girlfriend anymore.
"I couldn't believe it," said Ann-
Marie. "I thought he was going to
dump me but he then said that he
wanted me to be his wife."
There were several reasons why
they decided to get married
abroad.
They don't have large families
and the cost was another factor.
Ann-Marie said: "Getting
married in this country can cost
so much money.
"We met abroad so we thought;
`why not get married abroad?'"
They had been on holiday to
Greece in 2007 and considered
getting married there too, but
they discovered that couples had
to be in the country for eight
working days before getting
married in order to get a wedding
licence.
Their travel agent suggested
Cyprus, where you can get a
licence after three days.
They will be staying in the
Amathus Beach Hotel and getting
married at Pathos Town Hall and
have chosen a wedding package
that includes everything from
flowers to the cake.
"There is a lot of choice as
there are different levels of
packages," said Ann-Marie. "It
will be a busy first few days when
we arrive making final
preparations. I can't book the
reception at our hotel until we
arrive but much of the organising
will be done before we go."
Ann-Marie's her wedding dress
and her bridesmaids' dresses will
be carried as hand-luggage on the
plane.
They are currently waiting for
their Affidavits to send to Cyprus.
There will be 27 friends and
family accompanying them to
Cyprus and they will be holding
an evening celebration on May 23
at Morton Manor in Carlisle for
about 100 family and friends who
are not able to make it to Cyprus.
