Credit crunch
hits charity
THE credit crunch has
hit a long-running
charitable event in St Ives
so that fewer pensioners
will benefit from it.
The success of the Haigh
Trust Draw depends on
how much interest has
been earned over the year
and the current financial
crisis means that income
is expected to be cut back.
The draw, open to people
from the parish aged 65
and over, usually makes
special 5 payments to
between 30 and 35 people.
Applications for
inclusion in the draw
have to be submitted to
the town clerk's office at
the town hall, St Ives, by
November 24.
The draw will take place
at the Methodist School
Hall, The Waits, at 2.30pm
on November 27.
Arrests after
car collision
THREE men have been
arrested after a car crash.
A 23 year old suffered
whiplash as a result of
the incident which
happened on Saturday
between 8am and 8.30am,
in St Johns Street,
Biggleswade.
One man has been
arrested on suspicion of
failing to stop at the
scene of a collision, one
on perverting the court of
justice and the other on
aiding and abetting a fail
to stop at the scene of a
collision.
All three men were taken
to Greyfriars police
station and later released
on bail until January,
pending further
enquiries.
Pc Paul Willis,
investigating, said:
"Bedfordshire Police take
this type of offence very
seriously and we are
pleased to have been able
to take such swift action.
Two children were
present in the car and
had another car been
travelling in the opposite
direction this may have
caused a further
collision."
Anyone with information
can contact Pc Willis in
confidence on (01234)
841212.

`Heartless' passers-by
left OAP lying in road
AN ELDERLY woman was left
lying in the road after a fall, as
cars swerved around her and
passers-by ignored her pleas for
help.
Jean Cavilla, 71, of Montagu Court,
in Eynesbury, suffers from bowel
cancer and has difficulty walking.
She normally uses a wheelchair out
of the house but while making her first
trip using a walking frame on Tuesday,
November 4, at around midday, she fell
while crossing Berkley Street, in St
Neots. Mrs Cavilla was left lying in the
road by the kerb.
Mrs Cavilla said: "A bloke on a bike
went by, people in their cars passed by
me and I called out to two girls with
pushchairs who just went by giggling.
People just went by and ignored me. I
could have been dead."
She added: "I was lying there for
what seemed like ages, but what was
probably five or 10 minutes.
"Suddenly a little voice appeared and
asked me if I needed any help. In this
world today we get so little kindness
that I was quite overwhelmed."
The mystery woman helped Mrs
Cavilla up, drove her to her home and
supported her as she led her inside.
Mrs Cavilla said: "I just want to say
thank you to this young lady. She was
splendid. I don't know what would have
happened to me. It's a wonder I wasn't
run over"
Mrs Cavilla said: "It was my first
outing alone, not in a wheelchair, but
using a frame." She added that the
incident had put her off trying to walk
outside on her own.
Mrs Cavilla said: "I was shaking
from head to toe.
"To leave an old lady lying in the
road, it's disgusting. People must be so
heartless."
However Mrs Cavilla is keen to thank
her rescuer, who she describes as "fair-
haired, well spoken and nicely
dressed".
She would like the woman to come
forward so she can thank her properly.
Call Mrs Cavilla on (01480) 470556.

Flood campaigners `over the moon'
FFrroomm PPaaggee 11
Mr Bird added: "So even when
you go on holiday you have to
worry whether you should put the
flood boards down to keep down the
devastation it causes.
"Until you have been flooded you
can't imagine the heartbreak of
seeing all your possessions float
down the river."
Cllr Bob Farrer, county
councillor for St Neots Eaton
Socon, said: "It is a good thing and I
am pleased it has happened."
He added: "It has been a bit of a
fight to the end but it is good it is all
up and running now.
"The Paddock people will be very
happy as it accommodates what
they want."
It is hoped work will start in
February next year and the project
will be completed by the end of
June or July.
