A CLEAN SWEEP BYA CLEAN SWEEP BY CLAASCLAAS
We are into our sixth
season with Claas
foragers now and we
have found them to
be the most suited to
the variation of crops
we have to harvest in
this part of the world.
Because this is a big
dairy and beef area,
grass is is obviously
the larger part of our
business and with the
recent incorporation of
a `silage round' from a
nearby area our total
grass area chopped hit
15,000 acres last season.
This along with 500 acres
of maize and 1500 acres of
wholecrop puts a heavy
demand on both men and
machines. Our staff favour
the Claas forager because it
is reliable, easy to work on
and ergonomically suited
to to the long days constant
work. We do the bulk of this
work with three 870 four
wheel drives, changing one
every year to make sure they
are never over three years
old which keeps second hand
value and reliability as high
as possible. A fourth forager,
an 850 4wd is there for back
up and when the weather
necessitates a fourth team
to catch up on any back log.
This is an older but well
serviced machine, more than
able to assist the main three
but with less money tied into
it.
Two of our four `rowing up
machines' are Claas as are
the two `scattering machines'
and this year we have bought
a set of Claas `front and back'
mowers to try out against the
other makes of mowers we
already have.
Currently with fifteen
tractors in the fleet, we try
`not to put all our eggs in the
same basket' and we have
recently taken delivery of
three Claas Arion 640s. The
ultimate aim being to have
three but no more than four
breeds of tractor in the yard.
This caters for the drivers
tastes and keeps the dealers
sharper.
We have used Claas combines
on and off since the early
seventies and currently
run two 500 series Lexions,
one with four wheel drive
which has more than proved
its worth in recent wetter
harvests.
In conclusion it must be said
that the product is only as
good as the dealer supporting
it. Rickerby's have proven
to be excellent as far as the
Claas foragers and combines
are concerned and we are
looking forward to the same
with Claas tractors.
Opposition and competition
in Contracting are serious
issues but we have found
that if you give an excellent
service for a realistic price,
your customers will largely
stay on board. We're sure
this applies to dealers too.
