APPROACHING Heacham on
the main A149 road, you may
be intrigued by the eye-catch-
ing village sign depicting
Pocahontas, a North American
Indian Princess who married a
17th Century English settler to
the United States, John Rolfe,
whose family home was at
Heacham.
And if you are curious to find
out more about this figure from
history, then you will find
memorials to her life, as well as
to the Rolfe family, in St Mary's
Church, Heacham. Fact is
often far more interesting than
fiction and this certainly proves
the case with Pocahontas.
Many youngsters will no
doubt have seen the Disney
animated film Pocahontas.
Sadly, the film-makers chose to
present a fairytale version of
the story of Pocahontas that
does not include details of her
real-life connections with
Heacham, the birthplace of her
husband.
Pocahontas intervened with
her father, Powhattan, to save
the life of a leading Virginian
settler, Captain John Smith, in
1607, and subsequently mar-
ried his friend, John Rolfe, in
1614. (In the Disney version of
the story, she marries John
Smith!).
The couple travelled over
from America to England in
1616 and Pocahontas was
feted by Royalty at the English
Court. It is believed she visited
Heacham during her stay in
England.
Pocahontas and John Rolfe
had a son, Thomas, who
remained in Britain, but the
lovely Princess succumbed to
a fever and died aboard ship in
the Thames as she prepared to
return to America with Sir
Walter Raleigh's expedition.
She was buried at
Gravesend, where memorials
annually attract many American
visitors, particularly from
Virginia. Heacham remained
the seat of the Rolfe family
from 1560 to 1899.
Unfortunately the fine
Heacham Hall was destroyed
by fire, but those memorials in
St Mary's Church record the
life of Pocahontas and the
Rolfe family.
Approaching Heacham on the A149, one of the first sights you will see are the lavender
fields at Norfolk Lavender, one of the area's most popular tourist attractions.
A pretty corner of Heacham.
