Q: While visiting Washington, D.C., I
noticed a rental apartment listed as an
"English basement" in a newspaper. I've
never heard of the term. -- B.B., Frank-
lin, Tenn.
A: An English basement is a living
space partially below ground level, but
mostly above. It is common in older
cities.
Q: Why don't we hear new music from
Herb Alpert? Has he retired from the mu-
sic scene? -- A.P., Redondo Beach, Calif.
A: Herb Alpert's most recent album,
released in 2009, is a duet with his
wife, Lani Hall. It is titled "Anything
Goes."
Q: In a recent column, you made reference
to a "queen consort." I think you should
have explained what the term means.
-- B.G., Germantown, Pa.
A: I answered this question not too
long ago. A queen consort is the wife of
a reigning king. Although she holds a
lofty title, a queen consort has no real
power.
