GAME FISHING
Rivers
Brown, rainbow, sea trout and
salmon await the visiting game
angler. In fact more sea trout are
caught in West Wales than
anywhere else in Britain with many
of the rivers having excellent runs of
fish. Fishing on the Eastern Cleddau
is mainly managed by private
individuals and farms, some of
whom allow the public to fish on a
day ticket. The summer flow of the
Eastern Cleddau is augmented by
water from Llys-y-Fran Reservoir in
its upper reaches and it can provide
reasonable salmon fishing
throughout all but the hottest of
summers.
On the Western Cleddau, the
Pembrokeshire Anglers Association
control 15 miles of water, some
comprising both banks, from the
Old Mill, Haverfordwest, to
Treffgarne, Wolfscastle and Welsh
Hook. Day and weekly permits are
available from County Sports, Old
Bridge, Haverfordwest. 10.00 and
40.00 respectively. Tel: (01437)
763740.
For a small river, the Taf provides
some exceptionally good salmon
and sea trout fishing. Brown trout
also occur throughout the Taf
catchment and while the average
size is small, stocks of quality fish
over the half-pound mark are to be
found.
