THERE are many smaller villages in
Norfolk that have plenty to offer the
visitor, and one that is particularly
noteworthy is Ringstead.
It is very close to Hunstanton, Heacham,
Holme, Thornham and Docking, and boasts a
garden centre, art gallery and one of the best-
known pubs in the area, the 300-year-old Gin
Trap Inn.
Being situated on the ancient Peddars Way,
and even older Icknield Way, Ringstead is already
well-known to regular walkers in the area.
Ringstead Downs, between the village and
Hunstanton, is a haven of quiet and solitude
where one can be at peace with nature.
COURTYARD Farm welcomes visitors.
This fully organic, 890-acre farm at
Ringstead is about three miles from the
North Norfolk coast.
The farm has a Bunkhouse Barn
where up to 12 people can stay --
many guests bring their horses to the
farm. The farm has extensive rides, and
many miles of walks that are open to
everyone.
The traditional Norfolk breed of Red
Poll cattle, Saddleback/Duroc pigs and
Swaledale sheep are kept on the farm,
and all cuts of organic meat are avail-
able from the farm shop, open on
Wednesdays 12noon-3pm, or pre-order
from Lucy on 01485 525654 and collect
when it suits you.
Crops are mainly grown for seed and
include wheat for bread-making, malt-
ing barley, peas for animal feed, and
red and white clover.
Courtyard Farm is well known for
encouraging wildlife and walkers.
Several new woods and hedges have
been planted, along with fields and field
margins rich in wild flowers (the farm
was listed in the Good Gardens Guide).
Thousands of people visit the farm
every year, and since going organic,
wildlife numbers have rocketed.
Skylarks have increased fourfold, hares
threefold, and there are five times as
many English partridges.
Barn, tawny and little owls thrive, and
winter birds include curlew and flocks
of skylarks. The farm featured in a
major BBC Natural History TV pro-
gramme in 2005. Organic farming pro-
vides more jobs, far better welfare for
farm animals, uses less energy and pro-
duces healthier, tastier food.
If you have an enquiry about organic
meat or want to book the Bunkhouse
Barn, call Lucy Galer on 01485 525251.
The farm is on the left about two
miles outside Ringstead village on the
road to Docking.
