REVIEWED:
Two tasty axes aimed at
metal players. Schecter's
Demon 6 SKB and the Omen 7
Extreme combine cutting edge
design, awesome playability
and killer tones at very
competitive prices...
Words: Hayden Hewitt
Demon 6 SBK
From their humble beginnings as a
repair and parts shop through to
their ascendancy through the ranks
to become one of the most revered
names when it comes to rock
oriented guitars Shecter certainly
cannot be accused of resting on
their laurels. Whilst Schecter still
make delicious, and expensive,
custom shop guitars the US brand
are very active in the ever more
vibrant sub-500 market.
Both of the guitars in this review
belong to the Schecter Active Series,
which is aimed at markets
specifically outside the US. So
without further ado but with a
suitably theatrical rumble of thunder,
let's take a look at aptly named
Demon 6 SBK.
The sleek looking double cutaway
mahogany body features the
distinctive carved top shared by
quite a few models in the Schecter
family but in this instance it looks
particularly well defined in the `none
more black' matt black finish sported
here. The mahogany body feels
nicely weighted; not so heavy you'll
worry about popping a disc every
time you cough, just reassuringly
substantial. Bolted to this you find a
maple neck with a rosewood `board
sporting chunky jumbo fret wire and
some very attractive dark gothic
cross inlays further enhancing the
whole "I'm a bit evil, me" vibe.
The neck itself eschews the
skinny, speed neck feel you'd expect
to find on a modern metal axe and
instead settles for a rather full,
rounded, `C' Section which I find a
touch reminiscent of an old BC Rich.
Whilst being rather chunky it never
feels intrusive and is very versatile,
truth be told. This neck feels equally
at home whether you are playing
power chords or laying into a touch
of high speed shredding up at the
dusty end and the big frets
combined with a flat 14-inch
fingerboard radius makes easy work
of even the most technically
demanding widdle-fest.
Bits & pieces...
Hardware is sparing and fits the
stripped-back ethos perfectly. The
strings pass through the body and
rest on a standard tune-o-matic
tailpiece before heading straight up
over a black Tusq nut to the
asymmetrical headstock with
three-per-side Schecter-branded
kidney button tuners.
If you enjoy a spot of
wagglestickery you can always try
the Demon 6 FR which comes armed
with a locking vibrato, but
personally speaking I find the layout
of the hard tail Demon 6 to be
perfect: no frills and nothing to
distract from the obvious intent of
the guitar.
