THE JOURNAL 35
A
s a general rule the
professional toastmaster
dresses for the occasion
and usually sports a red
tail coat which adds to
the pomp and splendour
of any wedding.
Experience in dealing with formal
occasions brings the toastmaster's skills in
to play, ensuring the smooth and efficient
running of a wedding reception.
They go about their duties discreetly
and provide confidence and a calming
influence on the bridal party.
Toastmasters are also experts on
wedding etiquette and protocol, which will
ensure the members on your top table,
who have roles to fulfil during the
reception, do so in the right order and
without embarrassment.
Some reception venues provide a
member of staff to act as a toastmaster but
if yours does not provide this service and
your budget doesn't stretch to a
professional master of ceremonies, then an
alternative is to appoint a guest to stand in.
Traditionally, the best man performs this
role, although this may be an opportunity
to give another person a position of
responsibility at the wedding.
It might be you have a good friend who
could not be a best man or bridesmaid, a
sibling or guest who is accustomed to
public speaking.
Whether the person you choose is a
professional or an amateur, he or she is
responsible for keeping the reception
running effortlessly and to time, ensuring
events happen in the right order.
A good toastmaster will liaise with the
bridal party, staff at the venue as well as
those taking care of the catering, to ensure
everything happens when it is supposed to.
As well as time keeping, the toastmaster
should introduce guests to their hosts at the
start of the receiving line, before
announcing meals, speeches, toasts and
cake cutting.
They may also help guests find their
seats at the reception and there is no doubt
having someone with responsibility for
these duties will ensure a smooth running
the event and will certainly eliminate
pauses where the bridal party and guests
aren't too sure what's happening or what
to do next.
The presence of a toastmaster is often a
calming influence on those already nervous
about making a speech or having to take
care of announcing the order of the day to
the guests as well.
All of this means the bridal party can
relax and enjoy the celebrations, safe in the
knowledge someone has an eye on the
clock, the formalities and the guests.
