NORFOLK DISABLED FRIENDLY COTTAGES
Bircham Newton, Norfolk
This is a fine example of farm diversification
in its best sense.
We were wise enough to realise that our farm buildings
were decaying at a rather alarming speed and that they
would not reach the rising standards of DEFRA and
their colleagues, nor would it be cost effective to keep
on and on maintaining them.
So what makes our cottages special? All of our 8 properties are maintained
where possible and managed within the family unit. They all have level access and
low level switches and sockets and mixed height units in the kitchen.
They are simply but tastefully furnished with at least one roll-in access shower room
in every unit as well as a commode chair. Dogs and smokers are welcome.

SNETTISHAM PARK hope you
enjoy their working farm and deer
park, set in traditional carrstone
barns with a walled garden and
adjacent paddocks, with further
trails throughout 329 acres of beau-
tiful Norfolk countryside.
The farm is a traditional Norfolk
farm growing wheat, barley ,sugar
beet and grass.
It has 500 Suffolk Mules which
lamb from February until May each
year.
The lambing barn is the heart of
the farm at this time. Visitors can
see lambs being born, ewes and
lambs mothering up, and even bot-
tle feed an orphan lamb during this
season.
Meet the spectacular Herd of
Red Deer with 60 hinds and four
stags. During May June and July, it
is calving, an ideal time to see
these beautiful babies.
You will be able to see and feed
them on the unique tractor and
trailer Deer Safari ride. The guide
will help you view these magnificent
animals and perhaps you will even
see them swim.
The farm rears beef cattle
through the year; watch the calves
being milk-fed by the farm staff or
just admire the older cattle, who are
very friendly.
See the sleepy pot-bellied pigs;
meet the Shetland ponies Benngie
and Barney; say `hello' to Stella
and Stumpy the Dexter Cow and
Calf; and avoid being spat at by
Inky the guard llama.
Collect eggs and grade them
ready to sell in the Farm Shop.
Feed the greedy goats who love all
the visitors. The farmyard is full of
life through the year.
Snettisham Park has a huge ven-
ture playground, ideal for the seven
to 14-year-old child, with a smaller
version of the playground and sit
and ride tractors for the younger
child.
Walk a trail and discover some
beautiful countryside and learn
about the archaeology of
Snettisham and the River Ingol val-
ley, view the deer park and see the
local wildlife.
The Visitor Centre houses the Tea
Room and shop.
The Tea Room has a healthy food
policy with all food either being
baked on site or purchased locally.
It has plenty of indoor seating with
an adjacent Orchard picnic area.
The Tea Room serves tea and
cakes, soup, sandwiches, and hot
and cold light lunches.
The gift shop specialises in farm
toys, children's books, preserves
NORFOLK Disabled Friendly Cottages (other-
wise known as Church Farm), Bircham, is a
fine example of farm diversification in its best
sense.
The owners were wise enough to realise
that their farm buildings were decaying at a
rather alarming speed and would not reach
the rising standards of DEFRA and their col-
leagues.
Nor would it be cost effective to keep on
and on maintaining them.
So following a successful trial where they
let one cottage in 2000 (Stable Cottage) and
Owl Barn in 2001, the owners then proceeded
to renovate more barns of varying sizes,
reaching the maximum of eight, in total, at
the beginning of 2007.
They have had a tremendous season during
2008, averaging 28 weeks in all of the cot-
tages.
So what makes their cottages special? All
of the properties are maintained and man-
aged within the family unit.
They all have level access, low level
switches and sockets, and mixed height units
in the kitchen.
The properties are simply, but tastefully fur-
nished with a roll-in level access shower
room in every unit as well as a commode
chair.
Dogs and smokers are welcome.
