The National Trust:
Owns over 60 miles of the
Pembrokeshire coastline
and almost 10,000 acres of land,
all within the National Park.
Is a registered charity founded
to look after places of historic
interest or natural beauty
permanently for the benefit of
the nation.
Is one of Europe's leading
conservation bodies,
protecting land in its care through
ownership, management and
covenants.
Is independent of the
Government and relies heavily
on income from its properties to
fund its work.
Is dependent on the support
of its 3.5 million members and
its visitors, volunteers, partners and
benefactors.
The reserve takes in the
coastline between the idyllic
beaches of Broad Haven South and
Barafundle Bay. The cliffs here are
Carboniferous limestone and sea
erosion has carved arches, stacks,
caves, inlets, bays and headlands.
Between the two beaches is
Stackpole Head, a flat-topped mass
of limestone thrusting out into the
sea.
Stackpole National Nature
Reserve is a truly special place and
the National Trust, CCW and the
National Park Authority work
together to look after it.
For information about 30th
anniversary events in May call
CCW on 01646 661368.
See our Activities and Events on
pages 20-23 for other Stackpole
events.
The National Park Authority:
Was created to look after the
Pembrokeshire Coast National
Park, which was designated in 1952.
Works to conserve and enhance
the natural beauty, wildlife and
cultural heritage of the Park 240
square miles of spectacular coast and
countryside in Pembrokeshire.
Promotes opportunities for
residents and visitors to enjoy
and understand the National Park's
special qualities.
Works with organisations,
schools and volunteers to help
keep the Park special.
Owns less than 4% of the land
and property in the National
Park.
Is one of 15 National Park
Authorities in England, Scotland
and Wales, all of which are
Government funded.
This is a year of celebration for
one of the National Park's most
beautiful and popular places
the National Trust's Stackpole
National Nature Reserve.
It's the reserve's 30th anniversary
and you're invited to join in
celebrations in May or to visit at any
time to discover this peaceful
paradise.
The 200 hectare National Nature
Reserve is one of only six in the
National Park, and it's managed by
the National Trust and the
Countryside Council for Wales (CCW).
Part of the Trust's 810 hectare
Stackpole Estate, the reserve's most
striking feature is an artificial lake
known as the Bosherston Lily Ponds,
which drains into the sea at Broad
Haven South. Created in the 18th
century by the owners of Stackpole
Court, the lake fills three valleys,
forming the largest freshwater area in
the National Park.
The Pembrokeshire Coast Path
National Trail, managed by the Park
Authority with funding from CCW,
runs through the reserve. As you walk
you're sure to spot wildlife; from
breeding coot, swans, cormorants
and herons, to robins, tits, nuthatches
and woodpeckers. If you're quiet (and
lucky!) you might see badgers or
otters.
Late spring and early summer are
the best times for a blaze of
woodland flowers and the famous
water lilies carpet the surface of the
lake's Western Arm and flower in
June.
The NATIONAL TRUST and the NATIONAL PARK AUTHORITY here in
Pembrokeshire have similar names and similar aims, which can cause
confusion, especially as we so often work together to promote sustainable
land management and to safeguard the natural, historic and cultural
heritage of the coast and countryside. This fact file explains our roles.
