AMONG the numerous attractive villages along
the North Norfolk coast, Thornham stands out for
its tempting combination of natural beauty and
modern comforts.
Walkers and birdwatchers alike are drawn to
Thornham's harbour, marsh, bank, dunes and
unspoilt beach, which provide an excellent con-
trast of landscapes for a summer walk or,
indeed, a walk at any time of the year.
When you savour the atmosphere of the salt
marshes at Thornham, it's not difficult to under-
stand how this area was popular with smuggling
gangs in the 18th and early 19th centuries, with
wool, tea, tobacco and liquor finding its way up
the winding creeks around Thornham.
The sea air at the beach is likely to stimulate
your appetite, which is where the village of
Thornham comes into its own, with traditional
inns serving fine food and excellent ales.
The coal barn on the harbour's edge is a for-
mer warehouse, and has been the subject of
countless paintings over the years. Either side of
Thornham, there are attractive villages.
To the west is Holme with its popular beach
(you can plan circular walks taking in both
Holme and Thornham, involving the coastal path
and the higher ground inland ), and to the east
is Titchwell, famous for its unique bird reserve.
And just four miles to the west of Thornham is
the busy resort of Hunstanton so much to
choose from in such a relatively small area.
