1980s, 1990s.... to 2009
1980
IN October the Arndale Centre opened.
FIRST public discussion about starting St Wilfrid's Hospice
were underway.
1983
THERE were celebrations for the centenary of Eastbourne as a
town.
THE Local History Museum opened in the Towner Art Gallery
building.
SAFEWAY started building on the Star Brewery site in Old
Town.
1984
CHURCH Street widening, first mooted in 1914, was under-
way.
THE Woolworth's store in Eastbourne closed its doors.
1987
THE Great Storm.
1988
A COMPUTERISED check-out at Sainsbury's opened.
THE Dotto train started.
1989
PRINCESS Diana came to officially open the Sovereign Centre.
1991
WITH the closure of Beresford House girls' school, only four pri-
vate schools were left in the town - Moira House, St Bede's, St
Andrews and Eastbourne College.
WORK commenced on Sovereign Harbour.
1992
SUNDAY Trading came in.
1993
IN May, the first boats went through Sovereign Harbour locks
led by the Eastbourne lifeboat.
1994
A NEW lifeboat centre opened at Sovereign Harbour and most
fishermen had moved there too.
THE Beachy Head Hotel burnt down again.
1996
PRINCESS Alice hospital closed and Rannie's School of
Domestic Economy closed.
1997
THERE were further outflow measures at Langney.
THE Eastbourne firm Nobo plc was taken over.
1998
THE Hawthorns, a new type of wardened residential home,
opened in Carew Road.
THE town watched its last Eastbourne Carnival.
2000
PRINCE Charles opened the Age Concern Centre.
2001
THE 11th Duke of Devonshire became an honorary Freeman of
the town.
ONLY one surviving house from the 1880s is left along
Upperton Road.
FURTHER measures were taken for outflow to comply with EU
directions taken at Langney.
2003
EASTBOURNE had record sunshine figures and were the best
since 1911, with 2163 hours.
2007
THE Towner Art Gallery in Old Town closed.
2008
PARKING meters were introduced.
EASTBOURNE Borough Council decided to charge spectators
to watch Airbourne but the event was a flop.
2009
THE new Towner Art Gallery opened and planning permission
was granted by a Government inspector for a new Music Centre
in Carlisle Road.
