Product Design 3D
The 3D product design advanced level course provides
design students the opportunity to create innovative original
ideas but with an awareness of, and the ability to adapt
ideas to, a commercial need and specified target market.
Study includes the materials and components used in
industry and the relevant choices available to designers for
use in a wide range of product applications. The course also
includes the study of product marketing, promotion and the
influences on design development and new technological
developments. The historical study of design from the 19th
century onwards supports wider design development.
A range of creative techniques including CAD are used to
develop ideas for a design portfolio. Understanding how 3D
product ideas can be processed and manufactured is an
important area of subject content. This includes an
understanding of global industrial practice and the moral,
social and ethical issues relating to industry.
The second year of study enables students to develop their
own designing and making assignment at a level
appropriate to advanced level studies and will enable areas
of interest to be explored in-depth.
As well as career progression into furniture, interior and
jewellery design, the product design course offers career
opportunities in engineering, industrial design, CAD design
and also architecture. Visits to galleries and museums are
integrated into the course along with an opportunity to
experience an insight into a manufacturing industry first
hand. No previous experience of product design is required
although a B grade or above in a related design, art or
creative qualification is necessary. The most important
criterion is a strong interest in the subject area.
