Why should I?
Can you think of any other
time when you're allowed to
shoot paint at your friends,
family or colleagues? The
activity is also a great way to
spend time outdoors in
Scotland's countryside, offers
a good form of exercise and it
utilises your brain, too.
How much?
There are pay as you go
options at some sites that
start from about �15 per
session. For a day of
paintballing you should reckon
on about �40, including kit
and around 300 - 400 paint
pellets. Prices can vary
according to the time �
weekday, evening or weekend
� and the group numbers.

his is a great activity to share with
friends or for families. It's also a
great, alternative day out on a city
or town-based holiday. In Scotland,
paintball adventures normally take place
outdoors, in woodlands and around
disused buildings.
The original paintball concept sees
participants kitted out in a camouflage
suit and armed with a paint-ejecting
marker (paintball gun). Many
paintballing missions follow a theme or
scenario, such as
trying to reach the
pilot of a crashed
helicopter, who has
sought refuge in a
ruined building.
Working in opposing
teams, each one of you
is out to beat the
enemy and so tactics
and strategy are clearly
going to come in
handy.
What's more, paintballing offers you
an opportunity to act like a big kid as
you run and crawl across the
countryside. Perhaps you'll need to find
cover in a river bed or under a bush to
avoid being `shot at' or maybe you'll
chance upon an opponent crouching
behind a tree.
This exciting activity is also
guaranteed to provide plenty of laughs.
If you've never been chased through a
field and pelted by harmless yet messy
paint balls then you won't know just how
much fun it can be.
Unsurprisingly, paintballing is popular
as a stag or hen weekend activity and
makes a great corporate/team building
day out. For families, too, paintballing is
a fun outing, as children (over the age of
12) get the chance to compete against
the oldies.
And now with the opening of
Scotland's first purpose-built
tournament-style centre there are even
more paintballing possibilities. An
import from America, tournament
paintball is played on an Astroturf
surface and can take place
in floodlighting during the
evenings. The fast-paced
games require excellent
team work and can be
played by children as
young as 10 at ScotKart
Cambuslang, near
Glasgow.
While paintballing might
sound a little dangerous it
is in fact extremely safe.
Centres provide detailed health and
safety briefings and kit includes
coveralls, goggles, and sometimes neck
guards and gloves depending on the
venue. The paint balls are the size of
large marbles and filled with a gelatin-
based product that is biodegradable.
And if you're aged under 12 or prefer
a similar but less messy version of
paintball, why not try Laser Quest or
Lazer Tag? The principles are the same
but instead of paintball guns,
participants use state-of-the-art laser
`guns'. Laser Quest sessions are
available in Crieff, Clydebank and
Dunoon.
