A TOWN plan which will help guide the
future of St Ives is to continue, despite the
withdrawal of funding earmarked for the
project.
St Ives Town Council will be seeking the
views of residents on a range of issues
affecting the town and their responses will
shape the plan.
The council had earmarked 20,000
towards the cost of the plan, but funding is
not now going ahead after the authority
discovered a 270,000 hole in its finances
and had to make some spending cuts as a
result.
The News and Crier had reported that
the plan was being dropped because of the
financial problem, but town clerk Alison
Melnyczuk said that this was not the case
and that it was only the funding for it
which had been dropped.
She said the council would cover the
costs from other sources.
Consultations on the plan will cover
issues affecting the community and the
wellbeing of the town.
Mrs Melnyczuk said: "The point is to
find out what the residents of the town
want for St Ives, including the things
which need to be provided and the things
which need to be improved.
"It is a way of the town having a vision
on where it needs to be going and that
needs to be set by the people of St Ives. It is
an opportunity for the people of St Ives to
say that they want."
Mrs Melnyczuk said the plan could
include aspirational things ranging from
those which were inexpensive and easy to
achieve right through to major long-term
projects.
Mrs Melnyczuk said similar plans were
being drawn up by communities across
the country.

WORKING TOGETHER: Karen Jones, Derek Rutherford, former
assistant principal Geoff Watts MBE and Sue Shepherd with
pupils at the opening of the garden. Picture: Ian Narin.
STAFF and students at
St Neots Community
College have
transformed a derelict
area of the campus into
a memorial garden to
commemorate lost loved
ones.
The garden is for
students, staff and
friends of the college
who have passed away
can be remembered.
The area also provides
habitat for birds and
wildlife.
PA to the principal
Karen Jones project
managed the scheme
with cover supervisor
Sue Shepherd. It took
two terms to complete.
Derek Rutherford,
Sue's retired father, was
their project supervisor.
Karen said: "In fair
weather, staff can have
their lunch al fresco or
have one-to-one tuition
sessions with students.
"As the garden is
accessible via the
college's performing
arts area, community
groups will also be able
to use the facility."
The college benefited
from a grant from B&Q
which provided the
gardening tools and other
items for the garden such
as a bird box and cobbles
to surround the pond.
Peter Round, the
college's groundsman,
provided a chainsaw to
help clear the area.
The pond liner was
donated by a member of
staff and the Parent
Teacher Group provided
200 of funding.
Sue also managed to
secure a donation of
gravel from another local
company The Building
Centre, and some of the
plants needed for the
garden were supplied by
Huntingdonshire District
Council and Frosts
Garden Centre.
