Join the one in six
who marry abroad
O
ne in six British
couples now
choose to tie the
knot abroad,
which accounted
for 16 per cent of the total
number of British weddings in
2008.
Many tour operators now offer
special wedding packages and
specialists who can help make
arrangements, with wedding
coordinators on-site when you
arrive.
It is essential to find out what
is included in the wedding
package and whether there are
options to add things. You may be
able to get a wedding package
combined with a honeymoon.
The required red tape for
getting married abroad has
decreased, which means that
instead of having to be a resident
in the country sometime before
the wedding in some countries,
couples can tie the knot as soon
as they arrive or within just a
few days.
The influence of celebrity
weddings abroad has helped the
popularity of some locations.
Both Coleen and Wayne Rooney
and Tom Cruise and Katie
Holmes got married in Italy but
there are plenty more unusual
locations to get hitched.
Paul Cusack, owner of
Cockermouth Travel, said: "If
you want to get married
somewhere different there are
lots of choices.
"Weddings can be arranged in
Lapland, an underwater glass
chapel off Rangali Island in the
Maldives, Vienna's famous Ferris
Wheel, Sydney Opera House, and
the building in New York, which
looks onto the Empire State
Building.
"All of the ceremonies are legal
in the country they are taking
place but you should check that
your marriage will be legally
recognised in this country."
The downside to getting
married abroad is that some
family or friends will not be able
to make it, due to finance or time
constraints. However, for some
couples who want to avoid the
fuss of a big day, this may be a
benefit.
The Foreign Office has a
section on its website covering
overseas weddings and civil
partnerships which is a good
source of advice on
documentation, visas and travel
insurance www.fco.gov.uk/travel.
But the travelling doesn't have
to end where you tie the knot.
Your honeymoon is a chance to
visit somewhere you have never
been and may be a once-in-a-
lifetime trip.
You should choose a location
that you are both happy with so
start by working out what is
important to you, whether it's
somewhere that offers a good
nightlife, shopping or
sightseeing.
You could opt for a multi-
centre holiday, allowing you to
combine a relaxing beach
destination with a city break for
shopping and sightseeing.
You also need to set a budget.
Paul Cusack, of Cockermouth
Travel, said: "The honeymoon is
often seen as a top priority when
planning a wedding.
"Couples do see their
honeymoon as a chance to do
something exotic and the world is
getting smaller."
When choosing a destination
you need to think about the time
of year you are travelling.
Mr Cusack added: "You have to
be careful with the weather.
"Popular destinations include
the Maldives, which should be
avoided during the wet season of
September to December.
"The wet season in the
Caribbean is mid-August to mid-
October and it is July and August
in Thailand so this needs to be
taken into account."
Don't forget to check that both
your passports are valid well in
advance of your wedding.
For brides who want to travel
in their newly-married name,
they should get their passport
changed before the trip, although
they will not be able to use this
new passport until they are
married. Also remember that
your travel documents and
passport must be in the same
name.
