Sarah is serious
about her sport
S
PORT had always been a passion
for Sarah Edgar, and she would
spend hours as a youngster
playing rugby and practising
netball.
She knew that working in sport was the
only career for her and when she
witnessed a situation in her school when
students with disabilities were taken for a
separate PE lesson, she knew that if she
had her way she would do things
differently.
"I didn't like the fact that students with
disabilities were sent to a different lesson
to the rest of us," Sarah said. "It wasn't
fair and I thought they should be taught
in the same class as everyone else, so it
was then that I wanted to teach sport to
people with disabilities."
The 17-year-old from Cockermouth is
currently half way through a Level 3
national diploma in sport at Lakes
College. The course content enables her to
develop management skills and teaching
techniques which she hopes to continue
with when she goes to university after she
completes her course.
"I plan to go to the University of
Cumbria to study a teaching-focused
degree. I've made sure that I have
volunteered at local schools and my
background in sport should help me to
make a good impression on the course
tutors.
"I'm very serious about sport so I can't
wait to get involved with as many
activities as possible whether that be
helping out at after-school clubs or local
sports societies."
But Sarah's background ensures her a
secure start in a sports-related career.
Ever since she was six Sarah has been a
keen rugby player, and until the age of 13
she played for Maryport-based club,
Ellenborough Rangers.
Wath Brow is the club Sarah now plays
for. She said: "My dad is an avid rugby fan
and it was his influence that got me
interested in the sport.
"But when I started secondary school I
began playing netball. I've played for the
county's team but last year I stopped to
play for the North West.
"A lot of my former coaches or those
who I've known in sport are now my
tutors at college. In fact my tutor at Lakes
College, Matt Johnson, I've known since I
was little and he told me the course here
was right up my street.
"I had a tour of the facilities before I
started here in September last year and I
knew it was right for me.
"My course is really interesting; we
learn everything from coaching to
physiology. We get to spend time in the
gym, play for local teams and go into
schools to help out in the PE
departments."
Sarah has recently spent time at her
former secondary school, Cockermouth,
working with the Year 7 after-school
sports clubs.
As part of her national diploma, Sarah
has undertaken rugby league coaching
courses and key skills certificates in
communications.
"It all helps to give me a more overall
understanding of sport and all the
background topics such as
communications that's going to help me
along in the industry.
"I've only one more year left at Lakes
College then on to uni, but after that I
soon hope to be working in a local school
or sports centre."
