Chicken plan is
to be evaluated

CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a
chicken farm in Marston Montgomery
capable of rearing 12,000 free range birds
are to be evaluated by the Secretary of
State.
Derbyshire Dales District Council's
Southern Area Planning Committee was
due to discuss the application last Tuesday
but case officer Paul Wilson received a
phone call from London hours before the
meeting advising him that it was being
looked in to.
Villagers say the application, submitted
by Mr Phillip Deville, would have a
significant impact on their surroundings,
which include a thriving school a few
hundred yards from the proposed site.
In September villagers convinced
planners to defer their decision until
opinions had been sought from Derbyshire
Wildlife Trust and from the education
authority, but in the mean time letters
were sent to the Secretary of State.
As the application is now in the hands of
central Government, planners will have to
wait and see whether the Secretary of
State will demand an environmental
impact statement from the applicant
before discussions can go ahead -- which
might not be decided until the New Year.
THE 2010 Mappleton Bridge
Jump and Boat Race will benefit
breast cancer sufferers at
Derby s Royal Hospital.
Crazy contestants who brave
freezing temperatures on New
Year's Day to plunge into the
depths of the River Dove, alongside
scores of spectators, will be helping
to provide a digital scanner for
breast cancer patients at the facility.
The gesture is being made in
recognition of Sacha Wright's
ongoing treatment to battle back to
health.
Jim Breeze, principal organiser of
the New Year's Day spectacle, said:
"The Wright family have always
been instrumental in their efforts to
help with the Mappleton bridge
jump. So this is our way of giving
something back to them."
The event will be kick-started this
year when Trevor and Shirley Taylor
raise an arm to command the
beginning of the unique spectacle.
Mr Breeze is appealing for more
Ashbourne ladies to step forward to
take part in the challenge.
He said:"We want to see more
Ashbourne women taking part, it's
a great event for the ladies and we
need to bolster numbers and attract
more than ever before to come
forward."
Another hurdle the organisers
face for the 2010 event, is the fact
the police will no longer be putting
out the cones before the masses
descend.
"There is going to be a lot more
work this time around," Mr Breeze
added "there are always more
regulations to consider , so we are
hoping friends of the event will
come forward and muck in.
"Obviously the Ashbourne Divers
always play such a key role in
making the event run smoothly and
their help will be vital."
Spectators are reminded to note
that on the day the only approach
to Mappleton and the event will be
from the Ashbourne side.
There will be no access off the
Thorpe Road from Spend Lane
Farm and Hinkley Wood.
The main exit will be out past
Hinkley Wood and up on to Spend
Lane and back to the A515.
The road to the bridge on the
Derbyshire side will be closed, and
on the Staffordshire side there will
be access from Blore and Okeover
Park with parking as usual on one
side of the road only.
In the village itself parking will be
permitted on one side of the road
only, and those taking part in the
event will be permitted as usual to
park in the car park at the Okeover
Arms.
Volunteers wishing to help collect
money form the crowd are being
asked to get in touch with Mr
Breeze on 01335 344596.

More help needed for
crazy New Year jump
FREEZING WATER . . . action from last year s jump
FITNESS fanatics in Ashbourne
have joined forces to fund-raise
for breast cancer research.
Scores of people turned out to
take part in an hour of `pink
aerobics in a bid to collect a
bumper cash boost for the cause.
Ashbourne Leisure Centre
fitness instructor, Linsey
Steeples, supervised the session.
She has been teaching at the
facility for six years and has led
warm-ups for the Race for Life in
Derby, Bakewell and Castle
Donington as well as the
Carsington Water Ashbourne
Breast Cancer Walk.
The pink aerobics event is an
annual fund-raiser which this
year attracted 45 customers who
donned pink t-shirts after
spending weeks prior to the
event encouraging family and
friends to dig deep for breast
cancer research.
Mrs Steeples said: "The event
was a great success. Forty-five
people turned up for the hour-
long fitness class and everyone
received a goody bag for taking
part.
"We stage it every year and
hopefully the total funds will be
counted and announced in the
next couple of weeks. The ladies
really enjoyed it."

THE countdown to Ashbourne's new pub
and restaurant is underway with the final
touches to the Stepping Stones.
Set to open at the start of next month, the
pub promises to offer `real classics' such as
succulent chickens on a rotisserie, steak and
ale pie and beer battered fish and chips as
well as an extensive range of cask beers.
More than 50 new jobs are being created
by the new pub.
"As the opening date gets nearer we are
becoming more excited about the Stepping
Stones and truly believe it will be a great
addition to Ashbourne," said Patricia
Burns, from Marston's Inns and Taverns.
The Stepping Stones is one of more than 60
planned to be built by Marston's Inns and
Taverns, as part of a drive to provide top
quality pubs across Britain.

been announced at Ashbourne's Compton
clinic.

FIREFIGHTERS were called to deal with
a smoke-logged bungalow at Town Head, a
residential housing development in
Cokayne Avenue.
An elderly male resident was treated by
paramedics for smoke inhalation after
smoke puthered from a cooker in one of
the properties on Saturday at around 5pm.
Crews arrived from Ashbourne,
Wirksworth and Matlock and fire and res-
cue officers donned breathing apparatus to
enter the smoke-filled kitchen and deal
with the incident.
