Injury forces Glock
out of F1 finale
KAMUI Kobayashi will again
deputise for the injured Timo
Glock in the final race of the
Formula One season in Abu
Dhabi on Sunday.
Glock remains unfit to drive
for Toyota after cracking a
vertebra and cutting his leg in
an accident in qualifying for the
Japanese Grand Prix nearly four
weeks ago.
Kobayashi produced a fine
debut performance in Brazil
recently when he qualified 11th
and finished ninth, impressing
all within Toyota.
"We feel genuinely sorry for
Timo that his season, which has
included two impressive
podium finishes, is ending in
this way," said Toyota
Motorsport president John
Howett.
"Having discussed the
medical advice with Timo and
his management, the team has
decided to take no risk and to
put Kamui in the car.
"Kamui performed well in
Brazil in difficult
circumstances, so we are happy
to ask him to again deputise."
Treading a thin line
MORE than three-and-a-half
million motorists in the UK are
driving on illegal tyres,
according to new research.
The study of 4,000 road users
for Continental Tyres revealed
one in ten drivers running on
tyres below the legal minimum
tread depth.
More than four in ten (41 per
cent) claim to have never
checked their car tyres and a
third admitted to not knowing
how to check tread depth and
tyre pressure.
The research revealed seven
in ten people were clueless
about the 1.6mm minimum
legal limit of tyre tread.
Whilst a fifth of respondents
suspect they are driving on tyres
probably below the legal
minimum tread depth, they have
not done anything about it, with
the majority of motorists being
prompted to change tyres only
after failing an MOT.
Tim Bailey, head of safety for
Continental, said: "Eight in ten
respondents believe there is not
enough information available
on how to check tyres and
general issues of road safety.
"A third of people polled
admitted they were not aware of
tyre issues and road safety a
cause for concern and hence
something we wanted to
address."
I'll be back... in
trouble again
ARNOLD Schwarzenegger's wife
Maria Shriver has fallen foul of
California traffic laws again.
Two weeks ago, the wife of the
Terminator star and state
governor apologised after the
website TMZ.com posted
photographs and a video of her
breaking the state's handsfree
mobile phone law. And this
week, the site posted a video
showing her approaching her
vehicle, which is clearly parked
in a restricted zone.
The site claimed Ms Shriver
parked there for nearly an hour
while visiting a doctor's office in
Santa Monica.
Ms Shriver said in a statement
issued by her office she
regretted the mistake.
Santa Monica police said they
would investigate, although a
spokesman said it was not
immediately clear from the
video when and where the
offence occurred.
Sat-nav `slump'
DRIVERS' over-reliance on sat-
navs could be coming to an end,
according to a new survey.
A new poll by the car
supermarket Motorpoint has
suggested a resurgence in the
use of the road atlas, with 70 per
cent of those quizzed saying
they regularly consult a map in
spite of the popularity of sat-
navs in the UK.
More than 1,500 people took
part in the week-long study at
www.motorpoint.co.uk.
Sales of sat-navs have
rocketed in recent years and it is
estimated that as many as 14
million people now regularly
use one on the roads. This
comes in spite of a separate
survey by Direct Line which
suggested as many as 290,000
drivers had been involved in an
accident or near-miss as a result
of their sat-nav.
David Shelton, managing
director of Motorpoint, said:
"Although the vast majority of
us couldn't be without our sat-
nav these days, they are far from
perfect.
"Therefore, it is good to see so
many people haven't forgotten
their map-reading skills and are
regularly consulting a road atlas
when they are out on the road."

FORMULA One team boss
Ross Brawn has insisted
world champion Jenson
Button is "99 per cent
certain" to stay with the
team next season.
Talks are continuing to

to offer the Briton close to

Button took a 5m pay
cut when former team
owners Honda pulled out
last December, and even
agreed to pay for his own
flights and hotel bills.
Brawn said: "We want
Jenson to stay in the team,
and I think we'll find a
solution. We're working
with Jenson to find a
balance between what we
can afford and what he
feels is fair for his status
and the contribution he
can make in the future."
Asked if he is 100 per
cent sure Button will stay,
Brawn replied: "You're
never 100 per cent but I'd
say 99 per cent.
"We have a great
relationship with Jenson,
and he has been a
wonderful part of the team
and has done a fantastic job
this year."
