Housing market slump
hits guided bus link-up
A DEDICATED bus lane linking St
Ives to the Cambridge guided busway
will not be built until the housing
market improves, council chiefs have
admitted.
Philip Crack, head of major transport infra-
structure delivery at Cambridgeshire County
Council, said the housing slump had hit dev-
elopers due to partly fund the lane between St
Ives and Houghton, and it would not now be
built until the housing market picked up.
The lane is designed to keep buses moving
and to avoid congestion from cars between St
Ives and Huntingdon. It would play a key part
in the on-road section of the guided bus link.
The council has now dropped plans to open
a bus lane along Huntingdon's Hartford Road
and rework a junction into Hinchingbrooke.
Mr Crack said the 800,000 saved by
scrapping the Hinchingbrooke junction would
go towards the Huntingdon market town
strategy to improve transport.
This will include the re-opening of the old
Houghton Road junction which would enable
buses and cycles to avoid the busy roundabout
on the A141-A1123.
Mr Crack said the 6-7 million which would
have been spent on the Hartford Road bus
lane would stay in the transport pot, but was
likely to fund improvements in the Hunting-
don, St Ives and St Neots areas.
Mr Crack said there would still be a
demand for buses to use the proposed lane in
St Ives, but that the scheme, which relied on
contributions from developers building
houses in the area, was now on the back-
burner because of fears of recession.
"The developers want to see something
back from their developments," he said. "It is
still in the programme, but has been deferred
until the housing market starts up again."
Cllr Matt Bradney, county council cabinet
member for growth and infrastructure, said:
"We want to make sure we are investing
money in to improving transport where it is
most needed. The proposed bus lane in Old
Houghton Road offers significant benefits and
will go ahead, whereas the Hartford Road bus
lane no longer represents value for money
and therefore will be ditched."
