Snow queen
Angela travels
to Lapland for the
perfect winter wedding
I
t started to snow just as
Angela Wood and her
father Eric were getting
into the reindeer sleigh
for an enchanting ride
through the snowy forest to her
wedding venue.
When they arrived at the
gazebo, which was by a frozen lake
and lit with fairy lights and
surrounded by ice sculptures,
Angela exchanged vows with Mark
Brown in front of 15 family and
close friends.
This magical ceremony was just
the start of their five-day
adventure in the winter
wonderland of Rovaniemi in the
Finish Lapland.
Angela, 33, said: "We always
said we would go abroad to get
married and wanted something
different.
"December and January are the
only times you can get married in
Rovaniemi."
The couple, who got engaged on
Christmas Day in 2004, had
considered going to South Africa
but when their son, Mason, was
born they felt that this would be to
long a journey for him.
So they decided to go to a winter
wonderland which would be
suitable for both children and
adults to enjoy winter activities.
Rovaniemi is close to the Arctic
Circle and has limited daylight
hours during the winter months.
They were guided through their
wedding, booked through First
Choice Weddings, by wedding co-
ordinator elf Sweet Sherry.
Angela, a primary school
teacher, said: "It was only light
from about 10.30am until 1.30pm.
When we got married at 4.30pm it
was pitch black.
"Any of the activities we did
were done during the morning.
"It took a bit of getting used to."
On the morning of the wedding
all the guests went out on a
reindeer safari apart from Angela,
her chief bridesmaid Claire
Ditchburn and Angela's brother
Steven's girlfriend Lisa Hill, of
Amici in Maryport, who styled
Angela's hair.
Angela had hoped to arrive at
the gazebo over the frozen lake but
at -2Ce it was too mild.
"We were told that it could get
as cold as -20C," she said. "It was
quite mild in comparison."
Angela had to wear an extra
layer under her Justin Alexander
gown and she had to adapt her
outfit to the wintry conditions.
She wore thermals, thick ski
socks, fur coat, white snow boots,
an ivory fur bolero and white
gloves.
The bridesmaids carried muffs
to keep their hands warm instead
of carrying flowers and pageboy
Mason wore his snow suit as it
was too cold for him to wear his
wedding outfit.
The flowers were provided by
Angela's auntie Lyn Wood, of the
Fruit Bowl in Maryport, and the
artificial bouquet and button holes
of calla lilies, holly, ivy and
in association with
